I just bought a Sony DRU-720 A internal burner at Best Buy Friday. It had a $50 mail in rebate and I've been wanting a good burner so I went ahead and got it. I have not opened it yet, I'm waiting on my nephew to get some free time to install it for me. Before I open it, I wanted to know any problems/experiences you guys might have had with this unit. I had a choice of a Pioneer, Plextor, and the Sony.
Did I make the right choice? Also, I bought a 50 spindle of Sony
DVD-R's (item # 50DMR47LS3) which also had a $20 rebate. I plan on using DVD decryptor and DVD shrink to rip and burn some movies. Any comments, suggestions, stories would be helpful. Help me decide if I made the right choice.
Thanks,
Keith

Very good combination, indeed I have a Internal SONY-DRU 710A (older version) and it have worked perfectly for over 100+ burns in one month a not a coaster that was not my fault, it evens burn double layer perfectly and capable of booktyping to DVD-ROM adding almost 100% compatibility to +R discs, also the drive (well mine) has even burned smiwex princo and low quality media and does not even bother, also burns CD's really good, so you have made a right choice, also the SONY DVD-R are really good sony media is 1st class media so should not worry, another point, Sony Rebrands Lite-On so liteys are really good too ;)

You should also consider getting a couple of DVD RW discs to get started with. It may take a couple of attempts to get your first burn completed and having some erasable media is a way to save your regular DVDs. They are good if you are trying new programs or techniques as well. I prefer Taiyo Yuden media.

I'm currently using Pioneer drives but have had excellent results with Sony drives. Sony came out with the ArccOS encryption a few months ago so I tend not to give them my business anymore. My own mini-boycott I guess.

...and don't be afraid to do your own upgrades. It's a pretty simple procedure to add a drive and it'll open up the door for you to get a better understanding of what's going on inside that little box with all the lights and wires. ;)

Yes but that will ruin your warranty and if you ruin your drive while doing that your screwed, you will need to buy another one, I only open my drives when they need to be cleaned, or when there is an old drive which in which I want to test thing, or If it needs repair, so be carefull if your going to open it, you may end up fried...

I own three of the dru-710a's and i've never had a problem with these units.I had a nec drive and that just was a bad experience. It is true sony makes dvd burners but is also the culprit behind the encoding to stop you from coping dvd's but I already bought my drives before that so I would say screw sony now today. They just cant get it thru thier air filled heads that no matter what they do someone somewhere will find a way to beat them.Besides the home burner isnt the one sony needs to worry about but hey thats sony for you

Sony Does not make DVD burners they Rebrand Lite-ON Burners, and just because Sony copy protects DVD's and works on anti-piracy methods is not an excuse to not buy some of their excellent products (although they fail in some) everyone knows sony is arrogant and wants to have their own propietary format for everything but still they have some really good products and Im going to keep buying from them even if they keep working on Copy Protection methods, Gl with your new burner, Mine is really good although next time Ill buy a litey (Same thing the thing is that it does not says sony)

I think B2D327 was talking about installing a drive which won't void the warranty on the drive but may or may not on the PC itself. Checking with the manufacturer would be a good idea.
