I have a bunch of dvds that skip because they are scratched and as a result the copy is missing scenes which were skipped over. Is there some way to copy a scratched DVD that is skipping?

I would try to polish the disc surface first. Try to remove all the fingerprints and smudges that CAN come off. Then try to read the DVD as slowly as possible to the HD, about a speed of 2x. Then burn at a steady speed of 4x. Good Luck.

DVD Decrypter is probably the best ripper for damaged discs. However if they are too badly scratched you may need to try one of those SKIP DOCTOR machines that will remove some of the scratches.

There are programms which can skip bad sectors. So if you have BIG scratch you will get an incomplete whatever-you-have-on-that-disc.

I use either "DVD X Rescue" or "DVD Decryptor" to Copy Dammaged DVD"s and Usually I do not have Many problems...

Both Programs will either give you the Option to Ignore the Errors or to Copy the last good Data over the Bad Data or to Simply fill the Bad Data with Zero"s.....

FYI, if you decide to polish/wipe the disc, don't wipe in a circular motion, just makes more scratches.

Buy yourself a SkipDr machine ($30 appx). Great machine and takes care of those scratches on DVD/CD. Most places that sell media will have it or a machine with a different name. Well worth the investment and will save you a lot of time and money. Takes appx. 1-2 maybe 3mins max. Good luck.

Oops, guess I should've read the other posts. Sorry guys!

Minion:

I tried using DVD X Rescue to fix the bad sectors. But after it finished reading, the bad disc. it did not ask me to do anything else. I took out the bad disc and put in a new one, it did not copy at all. Can you tell me how to use DVD X Rescue?

Thanks

I would tell you but I do not have it installed on my PC so I can not check to see how it works.....

Actually DVD decryptor has a Simular Feature were when it hits an error on the Disk it will give you the Option to Ignore the error, actually if you go into DVD Decryptors settings in the "I/O" Tab in the "Options" setting there is a Box you Chck next to "Ignore Read errors" which will automaticly Ignore any errors, It is worth a Try??

Sorry i can"t help you with the DVD X Rescue....Cheers

I've had pretty good luck with xrescue. Had a few used movies that caused the same behavior. I polished the scratched area with automotive aluminum wheel polish then went over it with nevr-dull. Works every time. Have saved some pretty messed up discs this way.

I had a very hard time trying to copy scratched DVDs, used BRASSO etc which worked some of the time. Even changed my DVD reader to see if I would have a better success rate. The best solution I have found so far is using DVDFab Decrypter to rip. It has been able to rip DVDs which DVD Decrypter could not complete because of scratches/errors!

Scratches are the bane of DVDs. I will have to get SkipDr machine. I have had little success with polishing even though the disk looks good. Note ALL scratches and fingerprints are copied. Copies made from scratched masters are far more easily ruined than made from a "mint condinion" disk. Always clean you disk with deturgent and carefully dry the disk before copying unless it is new. We only use backups at our house. My kids ruin everything. Lastly, try cleaning your lazer lens. You can by these kits at BestBuy and other places. A dirty len will compound the problem and when really dirty new disks will skip.

Im with mybarras on this one ;-)

I had disks that I used my SkipDr on and used Decrypter and DVDXrescue that just would not rip to my hard drive. I then tried DVDFab Decrypter and to my amazment it actually ripped the DVD's. Now I have only had 2 or 3 disks I had to use DVDFab Decrypter, but it's nice to know that it is there and works like majic.

:-)

If the disk is too scratched for Shrink to analyze it, but not too scratched to play in your set-top DVD player, then try shrinking and burning with Roxio Disk Copier (with DVD43 running in the background).
I have copied several scratched DVDs this way when nothing else seemed to work.

What is Roxio Disk Copier?

Copying disks with less than perfect surfaces is an art. When I only had one tool and a so-so burner (NEC) I "lost" more than I won. I was able to copy the disk but they were "skippy" in most players. I just got the new lite-on dual layer burner a few month ago. Although it is cheap it is great with poor disks. My old burner had trouble reading disks that have that have that star-struck look. The lite-on makes a slightly better copy than a flawed original. If the original was skippy the copy will be a little better.

The cook on my boat showed me a trick that I wouldn't recommend. He took a scratched dvd and rubbed Mayonaise on it till it was dry and the thing worked. I think I'd try a different approach though.

I picked up a bunch of scratched DVDs from my Public Library.
Bought one of those motorized disc cleaners (not worth a damn.
After searching these forums I followed an advice that worked (for me).

BRASSO

Use the KARATE KID lesson.

BUFF ON...BUFF OFF..

It worked for me...but don´t expect miracles.

Some of them I had to trasfer to a mini DV, copy to my HD and than make a DVD.

If they have very deep scratches, I would say...FORGET IT!

Hope that my 2 cents helped

Minion,

In decryptor, you mentioned being able to IGNORE the errors .... If you do that, it will still copy the actual parts of the movie where the disk is bad? Or does it just skip over and you miss parts of the movie? (not being funny ... I am asking because anytime I had a problem with "bad sector" or something like that, I just figured it was a copy protection issue. If I can hit ignore and still get what I need, then I want to keep that in mind for future ref.

Sometimes you will get lucky and get what you need but most of the time you end up skipping over files you needed anyway so it really doesn't work that good, but it is worth a try you could get lucky. DVDFAB Decrypter seems to handle those probematic disks better than DVD Decrypter though so I would give that a try.

I just failed to copy a disk that was not very scratched. I assume "the scratch" was just at a very bad place. None of the heavy hitters worked. The scratch was un recoverable on the player as well. This scratch was at the end of the movie. Some errors occur out side the movie. I always opt to ignore the errors and see what I get. Disks are cheep enough to make a bad one from time to time.

Brasso and other abrasives never worked for me. The big problem is they may take too much off by the time you get the scratches out. I was smart enough to experiment with rental disks before I ruined my own. Once you rub through, the disk is toast. I am sure the solvent method is the way to go.
