Hi all,
I'm a newbie to the ps2 backup scene and I thought I'd give it a shot after picking up swap magic 3.6. I'm using dvd decrypter to create an image on my hard drive and then rebuilding the files with isobuster like poodude recommended. However, I'm a little bit worried with the differences in memory sizes with the ISO image and the rebuilt files. For instance, I'm starting off with an older game called LaPucelle Tactics. The ISO image is 1.2 gb. After extracting the image with isobuster, the files only total to around 670 mb. Is this to be expected? Am I not using ISObuster properly? Are the images and extracted files to be exactly the same in size? Please help. Thanks.

OK, I just have one thing to say. Forget freakin' DVD Decryptor, ISO Buster and all that crap! Get Nero! I've been burning all my games with Nero and have made no coasters at all!
Simply choose DVD, Copy a DVD, choose On-the-Fly if you have 2 disk drives (the other people have been pulling your leg if they say you should use images), and choose the highest writing speed possible that your blank DVD can burn at (example, 4x blank DVDs should burn at 4x). Nero automatically limits the burning speed to the highest your DVD burner can burn at (example, if your DVD burner could burn up to 12x, Nero would limit the speed up to 12).
I'm serious. Stop being such a cheap-skate, using all this freeware, and stop all the hassle with Nero!!!

If your PS2 cannot play your backups, and you've already modded it, then try banging at the wall 7 times. It will have a 1/1,000,000 chance of playing them.

"Get Nero! I've been burning all my games with Nero and have made no coasters at all! "

That's great for you, but I just made a coaster of GTA San Andreas using Nero and it lags a lot. I bought Nero 6.6 recently. Nero doesn't always work, just like certain medias doesn't always work. Over-generalizations make it hard for a newbie like myself. ANd to answer the initial poster's question, I think LaPucelle's Tactics doesn't need a rebuild, ie, just rip the ISO, and burn the ISO to a DVD-R with DVD Decryptor, (or, if you prefer Nero, use Nero).

Also, I rebult God of War and obviously it is a much smaller file after the Sonix tool/Apache/deleted Bonus movies - from 8-less than 4 gigs.

Ok, first off just skip the second post here. It seams we have a copy and paste guy who is really pro Nero.
Nero is ok, but doesn't work all the time. DVD Decrypter is free and has a better success rate, i have both so i should know.
Secondly, most games you will not have to rebuild the ISO. it use to be more common with swap magic 2.0 but since then has dropped off with the newer versions. You just use DVD Decrypter to read and write (the MDS file) to a disc.
Here is a tutorial
http://home.earthlink.net/~moderator/id3.html
if you do need to rebuild games i have tutorials on that too, see the tutorial section of that site.

Try just burning it without all the extra steps, set the write speed to 1X, and see if it will work. If not then you can explore other options.

yeah got to agree with steimy Nero is fine for burning cd based games and other stuff, like data! but DVD Decrypter is way forward for you on the DVD based games

has a lot higher success rate than Nero, and yes i have both...

thanks guys, I've decided to just use the ISO read/write on DVD Decrypter to do the job. Still haven't had any successful backups, but I'm thinking its the media's fault. I'm using some cheapy smartbuy 8x DVD+R's. I'm gonna try and go with something else thats been recommended on this board. I'll let you know the outcome...

Ok, so I burnt an ISO image using DVD Decrypter onto a blank TDK DVD-R of a game called La Pucelle Tactics. It's a pretty old game so I shouldn't have worries about patches or anything like that right? I'm using Swap Magic 3.6. My PS2 is an ancient V1. When I swap discs when prompted by Swap Magic, the thing slows at the words "Retrieving TOC" and then later alerts me that the disc is not a compatible PS2 disc. Can anybody help me please?!

Could it be that you V1 isn't too DVD-R friendly? I'm not too sure, but I have understood that V1's don't have good compatibility with DVD-R media, I could be wrong though. Do movies on DVD-R work on your PS2? It's a good way to determine if your PS2 has compatibility with your media.

I don't know if it plays DVD-R movies, but it does play DVD+R movies. I've tried burning on both DVD-R and DVD+R media, but neither of them have worked...

one dumb question. Since it is an older game, are you sure it is a DVD Based game and not a CD based game?
And from what i understood it should be the other way around on the disc issue.
I thought that V1-V4 could only do -R and not +R?
Not sure my first was a V5 which played either.

I have a v.1 and it plays DVD-R movies. I haven't tried PS2 games yet however. Waiting on my SMD.

My V1 plays DVD+R movies for sure, I have not tried playing DVD-R media on it. The case of the game says DVD-Rom and its more than a gig in size so yes, it is a DVD based game. Using Swap Magic 3.6, I boot up with the DVD boot disc, wait for the screen that has the load option, use the slide tool to remove the boot disc and replace it with the backup copy, press the blue button on the front of the ps2, and press x. The ps2 then continues to make some grinding noises and then says its not a ps2 disc. Am I using the Swap Magic correctly? Help!

Sounds like your PS2 is having problems reading your media. From what you're explaining it seems your lens is struggling to read the media. It could also be a bad burn.
