Hey i have some questions concerning drive upgrading, i just ordered the samsung 616t drive and would like to know the advantages of getting this drive, does it make the gameplay smoother on the xbox? does it eliminate the choppiness and studdering and you see in some games? appreciate any feedback from Quadratic or Pimpdawg or other people that have the samsung or lg drive installed in their xbox.

This drive is better because it is more compatible with different types of media (since it was a pc drive, modified to be a xbox drive). It is far less picky than the standard xbox drives microsoft uses. It also loads about 3 times faster than the xbox samsung drive.

Thanks PimpDawg,
I ordered the LG drive on Tuesday, buy Thursday night it was up and running in my Xbox. It took about an hour from the time I opened up the package from UPS to the time my Xbox was all buttoned back up, but I have to admit I'm somewhat experienced in soldering and wiring.
My old Thompson drive ran store bought discs fine as well as DVD-R's, but nothing else. This drive seems to run CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+RW, but I haven't been able to run any DVD-R's or DVD+R's yet. I've tried numerous movies and a couple of backup games which worked with a burned DVD+RW (which had been written to and erased a number of times). Any suggestions?

I would suggest you trying another brand of media.

Do you have any recommendations?
I've tried CompUSA (cheap stuff, but worked fine on the PC and DVD player) and Memorex DVD+R's and DVD-R's without success on the LG drive.

I'd recommend Verbatim and TDK.

@ Quadratic
Not to disagree...but my Samsung doesn't like verbatim..and I have some TDK-2x that have lost the data after about 4 months..don't know why..they haven't been left in the light or near heat or anything, just in the same case as the rest of my disks..
Arita Pink DVD-R 8x
Ridata Silver DVD-R 8x
These seem to work well on every drive I tried..

I bought a Samsung SDG-605 for my XBOX when I first modded it but it doesn't seem to read CDRs with DiVX/XVID movies on them. I always have to put them in my PC and stream them over the network (XBMC). Is there any kind of firmware update that can correct this problem. All dashboards as well as XBMC say there is no disc in the DVD drive.

@ Telcart...was that to replace a faulty samsung drive or one of the other horrors?..I've had issues with swapping drive makes..they work ok for a few days then mess around.. (seems to be something with the device list stored somewhere)..no solution as yet..
@mjeff36...If you modded the drive as per instructions then.. Yes, it does/should/whatever (too many variables with the xbox drive)

I recently got a great deal on ebay for the samsung 616t, I went ahead and bought a ATA 133 cable to replace the 33. I'm looking forward to seeing how it works out. Thanks for the tip!

Xbins is a channel on a program called IRC (Instant Relay Chat). Xbins is used for authentificating access to the FTP server (best accessed by an FTP program) Here's a tutorial: http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/xbins.php

Hm, I have a few older backups on TDK media. I'll try to see if they are blank as well when I get home.

I cannont find the GDR-8163B. Will the GDR-8164BK suffice? Has anyone compared the internals of the two?

I don't think the 8164B is the same as the 8163B.
There is a new inline mod board for the 8164B
http://www.patxbox360.com/adapter/manual.html (I am in no way affiliated with this company and do not endorse anything).
The bad news is that it costs as much as a new drive all by itself (about $30). If you are patient enough, you can find the 8163's on ebay for as little as $15-20 shipping included. I just found a place that had three 8163B's for $21 each and scooped them up.
Quite honestly though, after putting a 300 GB HD into the box, it's almost never using the DVD drive anymore so there should be no reason to expect it to fail in the forseeable future.

Thank you for the help! I FRAGged my 1.0 Xbox trying to mod it. I am not positive, but I think I tore up the D0 point. Not sure how to troubleshoot what my problem is. So thanks anyway for the reply.

They sell the adapter board that you need to make a 8164 work here:
http://www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/search.html
and that guy posted the instrucions on how to do it above. Seems like after $20+ shipping for the board and $17+ shipping for the 8164 drive you could have gotten a Philips drive off of ebay and not had to solder it.

To make it fit in the original xbox drive, look at the guide near the top of this thread by PimpDawg, the PDF from Pacforce. You'll have to glue in a couple of spacers to make the faceplate flush with the front of the box, but if you are:
A). Cheap enough to not want to buy a real OEM drive and/or
B). Determined enough to make the final product look good
You'll find a createve way.
I'm A) by nature and B) only when time permits. :)
As for making an Xbox drive work in a PC, a PC DVD ROM reader is very inexpensive nowadays (often less than $20). To use an xbox DVD reader in a PC you'll have to do some work to modify the little connector to bring out the power and audio lines to a standard PC drive power connector and if you used your drive in the xbox for a while, it is probably well worn out. If you need a DVD drive for your PC, I would wait for a sale and get a DVD RW burner for your PC. You can often find them in the $30-40 range (I just saw an NEC-3550 for $20).
As for modding the xbox to use the new dvd reader, it doesn't matter. A replacement drive will work with a stock box, a softmodded box, a TSOP flashed box or a chipped box. I tested the 8163B in all of them and it worked fine.
