Possible to rip and isolate (dialog) center channel?

I want to rip and edit the voice channel only and then re-author the DVD so I will have some background sound where I input silence. I have done this on just 2-channel but there is dead silence where I have edited the dialog. I could just splice out a section of background noise and input it where I have made an edit but I would have to know exactly how long the section is and I am not sure I can do that without getting my video out of sync. I am trying to do this on the movie Cliffhanger.
