what windows are you using, probably xp. check in add/remove programs to see if internet explorer is there & click remove. it should come up with an option to do a repair so do that. if not there than goto ms site to download a copy of ie6 to either reload on top of self or repair it self

I'm puzzled. The title of the thread say's "Desktop". Then a laptop is mentioned. Failure to load IE would indicate no Internet access.
But downloads have been made and the MS website has been accessed.
Do we have two different computers in use? Are they on a LAN? Are they even connected?
Take a deep breath...... and then give us your system(s) specs.

Are you perchance running Norton Internet Security? If so, disable.

Hmmm, Back when I was an AOL customer, they used IE. Not sure about now & don't care. It is possible that you might have multiple versions loading upon boot up and the AOL version is first and get's the resources. That or any other version that is running is not properly configured for your Internet Access.
When you say "Desk Top", most people take that to mean a computer that is meant to stay on your Desk Top. Not a portable or lap top. Yes I know that your booted up screen is your "desk top" It can be confusing.
Do you also have "Avast Antiviral" loaded? That has caused me internet access problems.
Be wary of all the internet protection programs you see. They do not always play well with each other.
