A friend let be borrow some of his ps2 games along with some ps2 bootlegs and backups... For some reason the bootlegs load perfectly in my ps2 but the backups do not.
My PS2's model is SCPH-39006 and I'm not sure what mod chip I'm using(I think its Magic Ver3.1 or Messiah? ). Can anyone help? My ps2 either be picky of a specific DVD-R brand or just doesnt work? My friend's ps2 pretty much loads any backup he made esp generic DVD-R...(He uses nero to copy and burn his games). Thanks in advance.
yours just may not like the generic DVD's
I know mine does that same thing. It gives me the "Insert a valid PS2 disc" error with cheap media
Nero is also not the best choice for backing up games, but if it works for hime fine. Take the game an burn it onto good media and see what happens, that is if you have a DVD burner, if not get some good media and have him burn it for you.
I see... I own a DVD writer too but I dont think the DVDR brands sold here are compatible with my PS2(its pretty much lacking) esp Imation which doesnt even work. What are the good DVDR brands for PS2 games?
Hi embl3m I find Imation fine 4 later PS2s V9 - V12 Verbatim, Sony, & plenty of the more expensive brands(mid range price approx $0.50 per disc). U could also see if there r any special boot button configurations 2 use in conjunction with yr Magic modchip. I know DMS & plenty of others use different buttons while booting 2 access special features that the modchip is equipted with.
I see... is there a website that shows a list of button configurations etc. of the mod chip? The only config I know about my modchip is set to PSX/PSOne mod(Set standby mod then hold Reset button until loading appears). Thanks~
Recently my friend gave me a Iomega DVD-R game backup .. is Iomega an expensive dvd-r brand? It still does not work on my PS2...
If it was installed in a store, theres probably nothing wrong with the installation, as they've probably done the install 100's of times. I'm not sure if Iomega is good media, but I am pretty sure that it's budget media. You can buy something like Verbatim DVD+/-R's at Best Buy. Also, since did you have any backups that used to work?? Or did you just get a chip installed, and then your friend gave you some backups to try?
If so, you may need to flash your chip so that it can read backups, as the chips usually don't come ready-to-play.
I see... None of the backups worked on my PS2 . Recently I tried out making my own backup but its still the same result. Flash the modchip? How is it done? I like to know about this...
BTW, here's a pic of my modchip.. sorry for the blurryness since I dont have a digicam I have to use my phone's camera:
I'm not sure if this is actually a magic modchip since the label is DVD-9 instead of V0-V8 >_<
It mght be a better chip than Magic or whatever you thought preivously. As far as I am aware only DMS4 and Matrix Infinity can read DVD-9...I'd like to get somebody else's professional opinion on this... However you can go to DMS4.com and search for a firmware or flash upgrade. It can't hurt any. Then after you dl it, burn it to CD, not DVD. good luck
It is definatly NOT a DMS modchip. Looks like Magic, might be a clone. Sounds like the mod is not installed correctly 2 me. Doesnt seem 2 b not reading DVD-R/DVD+R(try a DVD movie in it 4 me)doesnt matter if it is a copy should still play, if the machine CAN read DVD+or-R. What Im trying 2 get accross is, put in an original movie(DVD5 DVD9)& it reads it, tells U DVDs work. If its a copied movie(single layer)& it doesnt work, tells u that the unit is not being allowed 2 read the DVD-R/DVD+R format(i.e. the mod is most probably causing this). If it reads either DVD-R or DVD+R it is most likely a media problem. Just because it was fitted in a shop, means SHIT. I do mods professionally & Im a tech. Im also here with u guys trying to suss some of the problems I have with PS2s. I have also made some pritty horrendous mistakes that have cost me. Unfortunatly this is the price of knowledge. Makes it all worth while when U finally work out the problem u've been messin with. Let us know Yr results.

I see... DVD Movies(even bootlegs) work on my PS2. I tried one of my DVD9 movies and it boots but doesnt load(because of region ,I guess because my PS2 is a japanese one) . I even tried one of my friends DVD-R copied DVDs and it worked O_O For some reason why it doesnt load PS2 backups? I did brought my PS2 to the store and they say that theres nothing wrong with the wiring and all... I guess it must be the Mod-chip.. a clone magic chip perhaps....?
