So I was reading through the FAQs on the Guide sticky for newbie ripping forum and I was doing fine. Got everything going.. and then saw the instructions to update my chipset... heres the text:

Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click [Device Manager] on the [Hardware] tab, then click to open the [IDE ATA/ATAPI (hard disk) controllers] section. You will find: the Primary IDE Channel controller, Secondary IDE Channel controller, and a brand name controller, e.g. Intel, SIS, VIA, etc. The brand name controller is what needs to be updated. Please visit their website to obtain these updates.

Ok so I went to nvidia and downloaded the new chipsets - but while i was installing it the first time it just unexpectedly rebooted my machine.. I booted up fine and everything seemed ok but I can get anything to play in my DVD drive now. CD drive is fine tho. When i go to put a dvd in my dvd drive it just sits there loading forever - if i go to the explorer it just locks up with hourglass.

I went back to the device manager and checked.. i no long have the primary/secondary IDE controllers. All I have listed is the name brand one. I have Nvidia Nforce 2 btw.

Can anyone help me? I want to get my dvd drive working again =(. It's strange that my cd drive works and my dvd doesnt though.

Just an update for you guys... I did try reinstalling the chipset drivers after it crashed and brought back up my computer. It still doesn't show the primary/secondary controllers. The only thing that i can think of is that the chipset drivers said nforce4.. i am going to try reinstalling my chipset drivers from the cd i have on my mobo and then my dvd burners cd to see if theres anything that will change. I don't know the brand of my dvd drive - just some crap brand burner most likely, picked it up cheap at best buy. But it has always worked so far until this.

It's a Dynex DVD burner - DX-DVDRW8 model. I can't find anything. After it sits there long enough it turns into a cd player or so windows explorer says.. then when i take the dvd out it turns back to dvd.

well... there you go... Dynex is some low grade hardware. Buy a new burner that has some backing from users on www.videohelp.com

I'm sure when you pop in a different drive everything will be fine.

obviously your primary and secondary IDE channels are there or you wouldn't even be looking at XP.

Look i'm just tellin ya what i'm seeing. Ok and ya ya i know dynex sucks. Your talking to a guy that doesnt just have money to go throw around on stuff all the time. It was working before i installed these drivers - i think it has something to do with my chipset drivers but I can't figure it out. My CD drive works fine - but for some reason my DVD one doesn't. I really don't wanna go get another dvd player right now... I'd rather just use the one i have. Does anyone else know what I can do? I've been looking all over to try to find a fix for it. The chipset drivers say something about using their own ide stuff because its better for the chipset or something, obviously not windows standard though. That's what i'm trying to get back.

how new is the computer/mobo? Perhaps a bios flash is available or could help your situation.

Not to be rude but in my opinion buying brands like Dynex is throwing money around. Next time save for something decent. You can find name brand good drives for less than $50 so I'm having problems going for your lack of money issue. You just have to be willing to look.

Seemed like the obvious thing to do... thought you had tried that already?

No i hadn't tried it yet because I didn't think that it would actually replace them. Thought It was something i could fix and still keep the new drivers. But anyways teknow... the ONLY reason i got that dvd burner in the first place is beacuse they screwed up my preorder for Everquest2 and all they had were DVD's so I went and bought a dvd player/burner off the shelf at best buy that was the cheapest to install it. So i chose that one. Next time I will look for a good one beleive me. As for money, at the time i had it, now i don't. THe life of a college student i'm afraid.
