Lite-On DVD burner [sohw 1633] Help

I'm having a problem with a year old "External Lite-on sohw 1633 DVD burner." the burner reads DVD-Rs normally but when i put in a regular CD-R the burner cannot read it. I've tried different types of CD-Rs both used and new and i still run into the same problem. After it reads for about 5 seconds the burner stops, beeps, then starts to read again. It'll do this about 3-4 times and eventually stops. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

try to uninstall the driver, then reinstall it see if it helps. may prompt you too reboot, but worth a shot. being external and all.
