A:) Booktyping or Bitsetting is changing the format of a Dvd+R disc to Dvd-Rom. It provides better compatability with stand-alone dvd players.
B:) It depends on what kind of drive you have, some have the option, some you need to use modified or "hacked" firmware to get it to work.
C:) Dvd Decryptor can do it, under Mode-Iso-Write, in the bottom left there is a setting window. To the left of the "Write Speed" option there is a icon of an open book. Click on that, choose your drive model, select for Dvd+r and you should be set.
You can also change it in your firmware settings so it always booktypes +r's to Dvd-Rom.
There's a few threads on here with MUCH better descriptions. Write back with what model drive you have and what version firmware and I can help ya better.

Research your Drive here
http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php If there is a needed Firmware for your drive to have bitsetting(booktype)capability, this is the best place to start looking for it.

Alright, been doing a little research on this drive. Seems some people are having some problems with it, but we'll cross that bridge when/if we come to it...
I would D/L dvdinfoPro to see what version Firmware you have, also it will tell you what your current booktype settings are.
Here's the link:
http://www.dvdinfopro.com/
After you install it, open it up and you should have a screen like this
1. Choose your drive
2. Click on this icon to open up this window
This is what your looking for, if it says Dvd+r under booktype you'll need to change it. If it says Dvd-rom then leave it alone.
If it needs to be changed:
1. Choose Dvd-Rom
2. Change to Default booktype
3. See if it changed in the window
Now this only works if your using +R media, if your using -r's I don't know how to do it, there's been a few agruements on if it works of not and I'm not going to get in the middle.....
I'd give that a shot and see if works, also you can scan a disc in DvdinfoPro that you have already burnt to see what your drives burning as, guess I shoulda told you that before the slideshow......
Also here's a great explination of booktyping:

According to the Firmware page and The Dangerous Brothers, your drive is a BenQ 1620.
T.D.B. have a RPC1 modified firmware for it.
It will enable you to play any region DVD as long as you use something like RegionKiller to turn off the region checker in your Operating system as well as your DVD player software.
If DVDInfopro can't change your Booktype setting, you can try the booktype utility from BenQ.
It can be found here under "Flashers and tools"
Booktype management v8.4 for windows 2000/XP

Very good information above. I think you would be happier and have a better burner if you flashed your drive with benq f/w and then used the benq booktype utility manager to automatically booktype dvd+r media dvd-rom.

BOOKTYPING! I understand that I can only use DVD+R or DVD+RW to do this ! my question is that I have 2 Nec burners (NEC 3500a - 2.16FW) and a( NEC-2500A -1.06 FW ) Are these drives able to do booktypinG? I try to look this up on http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php but got the server /page acnnot be found message so I have to ask here? also I understand that this procedure booktyping enhances compatability for playback -does this also apply to sony PS-2 's my grandson says my burns /movies will not play on his PS-2 but they play everywhere else! They were all made on DVD-R Media! and Most importantly is this a permanent change or can it be turned on or off if using DVD Decrypter! I don't do to many DVD+R or DVD+RW burns simply because I've Bought mainly DVD-R media but I have bought DVD+R media also especially if was Taiyo Yuden /Fuji ! also If I leave my burns set for book typing +R it won't mess up my -R burns will it ? They say ignorance is bliss! so on this subject I must be insanely Happy!!! LOL!!!! excuse my ignorance please ! Thanks to all! PEACE & Happy Burning!!!!!!!

@BIGTOXY69 -
the latest NEC drives seem to have an aversion against booktyping so there are ppl who make it their business to tweak firmware to do this. hang on i'll have a look, i got a couple links that will help...

here's one - http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/
that link you mentioned has been a bit flaky for last few days (which has made my posting a little trickier lately lol) - but i guess they're just messing with the website as they're a very busy website

Yes, but in order to do so they must be flashed with modified f/w or mad dog f/w.
Quote: also I understand that this procedure booktyping enhances compatability for playback -does this also apply to sony PS-2 's my grandson says my burns /movies will not play on his PS-2 but they play everywhere else!
Sorry I can't answer (don't have a PS2) but understand late model PS2's will play all formats.
Quote: and Most importantly is this a permanent change or can it be turned on or off if using DVD Decrypter!
It can be turned on or off anytime.
Quote: also If I leave my burns set for book typing +R it won't mess up my -R burns will it ?
No, not at all.

SO by extension could'nt I just buy a Mad Dog Burner and be done with instaed? If so could you recommed a model # MAD Dog drive? And if I am not overstaying my welcome explain which Drive in the Nec line that the Booktyping MadDog drive is based on? Thanx again ever so much Mort81 & Creaky - & all my afterdawn .com friends old and new! Peace & happy burning!

Gamename - Okay Coul you please explain if yourMad Dog 16XDVD9- allowed booktyping before you updated fw or only after? Also I have'nt had any compatability problems with playback of either media DVD+R & DVD-R other than my grandsons ps-2 which will not playback my DVD-R burns/movies which are all or nearly all DVD-R . So If I may ask in my case would the whole BOOKTYPING thing be worth it ? Bieng you've been there & done that peace!

BIGTOXY69,
I'm not that familiar with nec drives since I don't have one. I only know that without moded f/w or crossflashing they are not capable of bitsetting. Some makes that are capable w/o moded f/w are benq, lite-on, and rebadged liteys (sony's, late model memorex's, and some others) plextor, ricoh, and LG. Pioneers and I believe samsungs (not 100% sure on samsung) are not capable of bitsetting. If you would like some more information regarding NEC's and bitsetting look here.

I recently flashed my Nec-3500AG with some modded firmware. Worked great, only problem I had was I needed to change to a different build because it wouldn't burn any of my cd-r's. After a quick second flash I've burnt 60+ that play in everything I've thrown them at. I'll have to try it on my playstation, the lasers old so I've been running it off a HDD, I'll report back.
HUGE forum specifically for the 3500(a)(ag):
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Forum/tm.asp?m=80060&mpage=1&key=%E3%A2%BC I used the Windows Flasher from here
Here's where I got my FW from:
http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/3500.html I used the fup2661.zip, since it had +r SL"single layer" Bitsetting
I also dumped my old firmware "made a backup" with the flash utility in case I had a problem I could always go back. I think it explains it in the first link I gave.
I know these are the same sites that the others gave, I just gave you the specific places on them that helped me.I darn near went blind with all the reading I did :).

OU812Ono- Sir Thank you for your help & support as well as all the afterdawn community ! you're all 11's in my book ( Spinal tap- Our amps go up to eleven ! it's like one more id'nt it! ) In other words your all tops! Okay I really appreciate all the help on the booktyping thing ! but I think I'm going put that idea on hold for now . Maybe I'll just wait for my birthday & christmas and get a NEC-4550 to replace my Nec Nd-2500A as I understand that this model will have either LIGHTSCRIBE -or something equivalent! and Dvd ram capability ! I don't know if I'll ever use the dvd-ram function but a NEC drive with light scribe sounds interesting ! I saw a review on website that was written in GERMAN and read the translated version of it . They said that the LIGHTSCRIBE on this model will print /etch your label onto the dvd in Bright Blue! instead of the normal lightscibe color! they also call the lightscibe LLS- laser labeling system ? sorry I don't remeber the website address but will look it up incase enquiring minds want to know! Thanx again to every one ! Peace & HappY Burning !!!!!!!- ps# 1 http://66.218.71.231/language/translation/translatedPage.php?tt=u... Just google or search for Nec-Nd 4550 and look for Computer base !

How come you don't want to try flashing your NEC drive with modified firmware? I have done it many times and it is no dangerous than flashing regular firmware and if works well.

I also wanted to booktype my +R's and using a NEC 3500AG drive, I had to use a modified firmware. Doing so is a breeze. I am currently using the Mad Dog NEC 2F9, 3500W2F9.zip at http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/3500.html
Works flawlessly. Not a big deal at all to do this.

TO KCHEV &swervin I becane interested in the booktyping issue because I try to keep up on Whats going on here at AFTERDAWN .COM and lately everyone seems to be into booktyping & DVD+R media . Like I said earlier I really don't have any compatibility problems with my burns/backups/movies unless you counr the grandsons PS-2 he says my movie burns wont play on it ( gone on DVD-R ) media! other than that the seem to work pretty well on everything else! I mainly use DVD_R media because that's what I have the most of - it seems to work well in both my NEC's 2500A & 3500A . I have nothing against DVD+R media as long as it works well ! I will even buy it over DVD-R if it is Japan Made and the DVD-R isn't ! ! I have'nt had any major compability problems So If I may ask in my case would the whole BOOKTYPING thing be worth it ? Bieng you've been there & done that and all! Thanx for listening and your patience gang! Peace & happy burning!

Regarding DVDINFO PRO and bitsetting, there is this warning in the help file.
"NOTE: We have discovered that the ?Set Drive Default? settings are overridden by both Nero 5.5 and Nero 6.0 even if the book type settings are disabled, it still sends commands that overwrite and changes them. Stomp Record Now Max does not have this problem and writes the discs with whatever settings are default. We recommend you use Record Now instead of Nero."

If you are not having compatibility problems, then I probably wouldn't worry about it. But I usually bitset mine just for peace of mind. :)
here is a link to the firmware if you want to try it
you can always flash back to original firmware.
just be sure to "dump" or backup your original firmware before you flash it ;)
