my problem is ive been given this dvd and when you view it the picture is stretched like a widescreen dvd is when you make it full screen ratio on your tv. the main reason i need to do this is i dont have a tv that allows you to change the raito and i dont intent to buy one for a long time so im just wondering if there is anyway to convert it back to 16:9???

ive tryed a range of programs and nothing so far has worked currentally im trying this method, first i use dr divx to turn the dvd into an avi then i use TMPEGEnc plus (sorry can remember what version off hand)to attempt to change the aspect ratio but to no luck, then i use TMPEGEnc autor to turn it back into a dvd again and nero to burn. im probley doing a lot of things wrong but if anyone could help that would be great.

I use IFOEdit for this

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/ifoe...

if you open the .ifo files with it you will find a line refering to 4:3 simply edit it in all the places you find it and save your changes. Then play in a software DVD player to check it has worked (but has never failed for me) then burn :)

thanks for the info i will have to try that, i actually worked out 2 more ways you can do it about half an hour after i posted this thread lol,one way is useing dr divx to change the ratio and the other way i worked out was to use TMPEGEnc plus i wasnt reading the options carefully and it was there all the time, but it makes the film stutter once burned onto a dvd...

I remember feeling that I was not quite understanding your original post on the 29th ... so I didn't respond. Maybe I'm missing something here but you can't simply change the aspect ratio of a movie when you copy it. An original DVD movie is either authored in it's original widescreen or parts of the original widescreen image are chopped off, during authoring, using the pan & scan method for people who still want to buy a "square" movie for a square TV. The movie is either widescreen or "full screen" which is unchangable.

How the movie is projected on your monitor is a function of the "settings" or "choice" menu on your dvd player (not your TV) which is accessed by a button on the player's remote. The TV/Monitor simply responds to the signal sent by the player ... or have I been spoiled by my own home entertainment equiptment?

Typical player settings choices are:
16:9 Normal
16:9 Auto
4.3 Letterbox (LB)
4.3 Pan & Scan (PS)
but your brand of player may have slightly different choices.

Sorry if I have misunderstood your question.

Best regards,
Whisperer

believe me after i wrote that thread i didnt really understand it either lol, what it is, is that my friend downloaded me a film (i wont say what one) but something is horriable wrong, you can tell its a widescreen dvd but some how its been changed to 4:3 so when you play it on a normal tv is stretched to fill the screen with no letterbox bars or anything, but if you have a decent tv you can change the ratio to view the film normally, but i am a poor student so i cant afford a decent tv and my dvd player doesnt have that option either, so i was just trying to find out a way of changeing it so i can watch it on my tv and not on my pc.

using iso edit i can change the ratio so i can view it proply on my pc but when i burn it its still the same. i do believe im facing an endless battle...i now have 6 copies of the same dvd, so im just about ready to give up.
