So I got the Swap Magic 3.6 discs the other day, and I am using the flip cover method to try and play my backups. I keep getting the error message "Not a valid PS2 disc" when I try to load the games.

I first attempted to burn GTA SA and MLB 2K5 onto Dynex DVD+R, using both Alcohol 120% and DVD Decoder, but the same problem occured.

At first I thought my problem was with the media, because Dynex DVDs are pretty cheap. So I went out and bought some Verbatim DVD-R's, but that didn't help.

I tried then to burn a movie, and made a copy of Major League, which wouldn't play in either my PS2 (w/o the swap discs) or in my commercial DVD player.

I then thought the problem was with the way I was trying to copy the CDs. I've been trying using mostly the ISO Read and ISO Write functions on DVD Decrypter, but I tried messing around with some options on both that and Alcohol 120, and I fooled around with AnyDVD as well but I kept getting the same "Not a valid PS2 disc" error.

Then I noticed that when I tried to Iso-write to Verbatim discs, DVD Descrypter had a line that said - Supported Write Speeds: 1x - Even though the Verbatim DVD-R's supported up to 16x. When I plugged in the Dynex DVD, DVD Decrypter said that it only supported a 2.4x Write Speed.

So, now I believe that my problem could be an outdated DVD Burner. But before I went and did that, I wanted to get some opinions to make sure that this is really what is happening. Does anyone else have any ideas?

I'm not sure what kind of DVD burner I have - I am working off of an eMachines laptop that is almost exactly a year old. When I look at the properties tab on my drive, it says that I have a:
Slimtype DVDRW SDW-431S and the Manufacturer is listed as: (Standard CD-ROM drives).

In my computer manual is says I have a class 1 burner - and perhaps that is only a dataDVD burner?

If anyone believes that it is my DVD burner that isn't up to snuff, any suggestions on an economic burner that will work well, and where to get it from?

Also, am I burning the DVDs correctly? When I ISO read from a PS2 game, it creates both an .iso file and an .mds file. Which one am I suppoed to ISO write to the DVD.

Maybe it's my PS2 lens that is getting worn down? I have a V7 PS2 that has been used fairly heavily, and although it still works fine you can tell its getting old.

Any suggestions would be welcome, thanks a lot.

Is there any other information needed to help? I can call up emachines and check on my burner type

to rule out the laser try using an original to see if they boot if you still get an error you'll know it's most likely the ps2 laser. Ps2s play burned movies without any kind of modification and you said the movie you burned wouldn't work in your ps2 or your standalone dvd player, this is why I'm thinking it might be something other than your laser.

Well for me I think is not your burner because my eMachines Desktop burner works good with all my PS2 games. I think your PS2 laser is weak.

Yea, I can boot normal games using my PS2 with or without the Swap Method.

Serrano - How old is your desktop? Maybe you have a different burner?

When using the DVD Decrypter Write function, select the .iso file to burn, not the .mds. The fact that your ps2 or any dvd player for that matter is not playing your burnt DVD movies is a problem you should address first. I can almost guarantee that the ps2 is not the problem, I have a v1 ps2 and Swap Magic still works on it no problem. At one time, the ps2 was having some troubles reading discs, but I solved that by spraying it out with some air-in-a-can, and that problem disappeared completely. If you have a friend with a DVD burner, try burning a movie on that one and try it out on your ps2. If that works, your problem lies in your burner. If it still doesn't work, either both burners are defective or your ps2 is. 2.4x write speed should still be sufficient.

Were first generation DVD Burners built only to burn data-only DVDs? Maybe that's my problem

@Blinded04,

Are you sure you have a dvd burner? Well, I'm assuming you do have one, and I'm assuming that you already know how to back up PS2 games using DVD Decrypter. Additionally, I recommend you to use good quality medias such as FUJI/Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, MAXELL and SONY (make sure it's a "DVD+R" and says: "Made In Japan", since your PS2 is a version 7, you won't have to worry about it. However, it won't hurt to "book type" the settings to "DVD-ROM" though -- it's obvious that any PS2 can read and play DVD-ROM format easier.

I've backed up tons of PS2 games flawlessly using the above medias. Let us know what kind of dvd burner you have. Apparently, DVD Decrypter can help you to change the "book type" into DVD-ROM as I'd stated earlier, that is, if you're lucky enough to have one that DVD Decrypter can book type for you. However, if you don't have one and if you have Nero Ultra, then set the settings to "automatically change book type" and whenever you perform back up, Nero will change it automatically in prior to backing up. Just thought that I'll add this for any newbies that's all.

***To play/boot backed up PS2 games using SWAP MAGIC 3.6 PLUS & FLIP TOP***

01) Power up your PS2 console
02) Insert SWAP MAGIC 3.6 PLUS dvd into your PS2, close tray
03) wait until SWAP MAGIC boot up to the "Main Load Menu"
04) Open up your FLIP TOP from top and take out your SWAP MAGIC disc
05) Put your backed up PS2 DVD-/+R in, then closed FLIP TOP cover
06) Hit [X] to boot up, that's it.. now your backed up PS2 game should load and you can play.

Okay so I called up eMachines, and they said I have a:

Lite-on SDW 431S

that came standard with the computer. The specs can be found here:
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=9405

It has 4x DVD+R and 2x DVD-R Write capability, and it says it can write DVD movies so this probably isn't my problem?? Can anyone help me I'm stuck in a rut here

first off,not sure why you would you say this..
Quote:
select the .iso file to burn, not the .mds.
always select the mds file

its there for a reason, and although it may work without,i see no reason to select the iso,the mds acts like a feeder for the iso file

are you actually having successful burns?

instead of trying to copy/boot a ps2 game,i would try and concentrate on copying and playing a dvd movie,,this way,it will rule out the chances of there being a problem with your swapmagic procedure

The programs tell me I'm having successful burns, and it also seems to verify fine when I choose that option.
