Hi,

Was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I have the following:

AMD Athlon XP 2600
512MB PC3200 RAM
40 GB Hard Drive
LG4163 DVD-RW Drive
DVD X Copy
TDK 8 Speed -R discs

I brought my DVD Drive about 3 months ago and since then I have created in excess of 60 movies and 30 Data DVD's, all of which came out perfectly first time.

Over the last week however I have noticed that the picture quality of my discs are looking very compressed, a bit like a freeview or Sky Digital picture.

It's not the movie as I redid an old movie, I've tried using Shrink DVD, I've tried using Maxell DVD's and I've tried playing my discs thorough another player and I still get the same result.

The only other possibilty I think it could be is the lens on the Rewriter, but I don't see how this would make the picture look compressed.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

well as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What looks great to some people may not look that good to others. I tend to look for perfection so I can see your frustration.

DVD X Copy doesn't produce the greatest video quality (sorry to burst your bubble), DVD Shrink can produce much better quality but you need the quality enhancements features enabled to do this (after you click the Backup button a window pops up, click the quality enhancements tab and check both options, you'll have to mess around with the error compensation drop-down menu, most people prefer smooth but I like sharp). This will take a while longer but well worth the wait.

The size of your TV makes a difference too. The larger the TV the larger the flaws will appear, HDTV makes them more visible as well.

Burn speed may have some affect on this, although burning too fast usually results in errors such as skipping or freezing during playback (is this happening to you?). DVD X Copy burns at max speed, which is most likely 8x for those discs combined with your burner (about 7-10 minutes for the burn part). Most people including myself try to keep the burn speeds around 4x or less.
