I don't know what it is, but I can make some suggestions...

Maybe the Toshiba consumes too much power and your PSU can't handle it (probably not the case, but possible)

You could need some more RAM. If you can't afford it now, check your system startup. On my system I go to start menu, run... then type msconfig.

On general tab, turn on (check) selective startup and check all the things there. Then go to the startup tab and take out anything you are sure you do not need. For stuff you don't know about, get something like Spybot search & Destroy (free).

For that after you install it, run it in advanced mode. On the side you will see a menu. Click on *tools* and then find *system startup* and click on it. Look to the right of the screen and see if there is a yellow window. If not click on the double arrow tab all the way to the right. Now, one by one click on everything on the list and see what S&D says about it. Uncheck whatever you don't need. I only run Taskmonitor, statemgr, & rvtscn95(norton).

You don't need stuff like spool (for printing), stimon (for images, when off dramatically increases USB camera transfers), nwiz (nvidia wizard), mstask (task scheduler), etc...

Check your system for virus, spyware and adware. You may be infected. S&D will take care of the spyware & adware.

Go to BIOS and set HDD as first boot device.

Turn off auto play. Right click on my computer and select properties. Go to device manager and find your dvd burner under the cdrom tab (make sure it is Toshiba and not still the Emprex). Select it and click on properties. Then go to settings and uncheck *autoinsert notification*.

After you boot up, press ctrl+alt+del and see if wnmgmt is running. Get rid of it.

If you are unsure about doing any of this, or you are afraid you can always contact Toshiba or wait for some more feedback from others.

just check your DMA settings for now, as all you say you've done is put a new drive in. see here - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

Are your dvd devices internal or external or both?
Are they connected directly to the motherboard or via USB or PCI adapter card etc.

Are they displayed in Windows, and do they operate correctly?

Make sure that they are both jumpered correctly, master/slave etc and are not conflicting each other.

...............PIO is no go, DMA all the way...............
Beware of the Pixies - they move in over night and turn your life upside down
