I decided a long time ago that I needed a new video card, so I finally went out and bought this card http://www.leadtek.com/3d_graphic/winfast_px6600_gttdhextreme_1.html. Now I must note, that I do not know that much about computers *sighs* never had the time to do much research, so upon coming home, I found out that my motherboard doesn't have a PCI express slot.
Now I am out to get a new Motherboard, but the question is, is it wise to stick with my current processor or get a new motherboard and a new processor together, so I don't have to worry about upgrading for a long while. My current processor is Intel4 2.0Mhz
I am looking forward for your advice, should I stick with intel or go for AMD? What processor should I choose so it would be the most cost effective, something that would last me for a couple of years, but wouldn't be the high end. I do play new games, but I wouldn't call myself a hardcore gamer, I do not need everything to be the best.
Also when you guys do give advice, please include some motherboards that would go with the processor you recommend.
Let me rephrase, the best option would be a motherboard that would support my current processor, but that would also be suitable for future updates. Basically a motherboard that would support the better processors even in a year or so, is it even possible or will it be a waste of money?
all boards that use your cpu don't have pci/e so either replace your new pci/e videocard with an agp slot videocard that are being discontinued or get a new motherboard & cpu that has pci/e slot. your choice
as ddp stated if you want to stick with what you got you will need a new proc and a new motherboard, but as someone that just recently jumped from a 478 will tell you newer is better, now I stupidily bought a agp card for I upgraded, so I was sorta in the same boat. I installed my agp card in my current 478 gateway 510se p4 2.8 ghz cpu I thought all is good, I spent 400 bucks on a graphics card I can play anything now, well I was wrong. issue upon issue I finally ditched my old rig bought a new 939 3800 installed my agp and have been in heaven since. to me 478 p4 will not handle the power. but thats me. due yourself a favor and upgrade to something that will be still now in a couple of years. I wish I would have bought pciex in the beginning but now in the sorta middle. oh well when I upgrade in a year atleast I know my son will get "my current system" one hell of a rig to be 9.if I was you I would get a 3500 amd venice and get a single not sli asus motherboard might cost ya 350 bucks but you will be happy.
Thank you for the replies and for taking the time to explain it to me. I decided to go for AMD, any thought of a good motherboard that would go with such a processor. Also, which one of those 64bit processors would be the best, I mean the most cost effective?

second link is a asus motherboard with pciex for 124 thats 391.00
but 1 heck of a package for the price, I paid more just for my video card, also my cpu cost more than that package, and the 3500 will out overclock mine!
