I have a Que DVD-RAM/DVD-R burner and I've tried creating a DVD using DVDit. The DVD creates fine, and works on my (and other's)computer, but my Sony DVP-C660 Home Dvd player refuses to reconize the disk.
Can anyone give me a clue why my Sony player will not reconize the disk? The DVD-R's are a generic brand that I picked up via the web. Could it be the disk or is my Sony player in capabile of playing a DVD-R for some reason?
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I gave the copy that would not play on my Sony Home player to a friend last night and it works fine on his player (he doesn't know what brand it was yet, he'll check later today).
So does that mean that my Sony won't ever play my DVD's or is it possibly a media issue. It would really suck if my Sony wouldn't play these DVD's, it's less than a year old and cost $300.
I found some information that might apply to my problem. One poster mentioned on a DVD-R related thread that his Sony player would not reconize any DVD-R media, but had it had no problem with the DVD-RW media. Apparently DVD-RW media is more reflective. The local CompUSA has some DVD-RW disks, so I'm going down in a little while to pick one up and then run a test burn tonight to see if that makes a difference. I might also look at some of the other DVD-R disks and see if any appear to have a higher reflectivity than the generic disks I have and I might try another shot at the DVD-R's.
I did some test burns using Memorex DVD-R and DVD-RW disks. Both worked fine on my Sony Standalone player. It would appear, at least with Sony the brand (if you research Sony standalone players at www.vcdhelp.com you will find that most share the same problems), that you would be better off not purchasing generic or bottom-line DVD disks as results indicate that they don't work most of the time.
I found this information online about the Sony C660 (which I also own) about a secret menu that can be used to calibrate the laser for CD-R (hopefully for DVD-R and DVD+R) I haven't tried this yet but will later today.
By pressing (one after the other) "title", "clear" and the "power" button while dvd player is in standby mode will bring you to a hidden menu (make sure your TV is on!). Select option 1 from the TEST MODE MENU (Drive auto adjustment). From the next submenu choose option 4 (SACD). The tray will open allowing you to put in a CD-R into the player. Follow the on-screen instructions, the first steps are fast but after a while, it checks jitters and that takes forever, hitting "return" then will stop the process. In my case, eventhough I aborted the operation, after I exited the hidden menu, I was once again able to read CD-Rs.
