Hi, i just got to this website, and hopefully i can get some help. "Thank you to those who do in advance." I'm using a compaq presario 5000, i upgraded its ram to 312 mb. I am running at 851Mhz, and also running at 37.2 gb of hard drive. I'm trying to upgrade my computer, since thats the field i want to be in someday. But im not sure wether or not my compaq can handle a bigger cpu change, and a bigger hard drive. Can anyone help me on those two things or what should i do, because i dont want to buy a brand new computer. i know that would be the easy thing to do but like i said this would be my carrier later on in life. thanx to those who help once again.

It all depends what you want your PC to do. What is your budget? Whether your MOBO will handle a faster CPU & memory is a major factor.

so a athlon you may be now were motherboard limited, so lets find out what the max your motherboard can handle get ahold of sisoft sandra or lavalis everest home edition should be small downloads, I got them from pc gamers demo disk, these utilities will tell you everything about your pc what it has and the max of what it will take, If we could put a athlon xp in that thing it would be a hella lot faster!

ok i downloaded that lil program, to find out the max my motherboard can handle where do i go? because i think i found it my self but im not sure, after i opened the program i went on CPU and BIOS information? or is it somewhere else?

well after extensive reading, you cant overclock it atleast not hardware wise, you can get a better socket a processor but I cant seem to find your board limitations, also compaq cases are made by them so not interchangeable along with their power supplies, and as your using a 200mhz fsb it has to be pretty slow. My suggestion all depends on your budget and what you want to do with it like pulsar said! I would start saving and buying new parts for a new pc and leave this one alone as it is pretty old you can use it to surf and read up online while your building your new pc. bigger hard drive is no problem though just keep it below 137 gigs!

the case & psu is iffy on another board, can't use the old ram on new motherboard. so get a new case, motherboard, cpu(amd/intel), ram & maybe videocard of new motherboard does not have onboard video plus agp/pci/e slot. can use exiting drives like floppy, hd & cd/dvd rom to save costs

so are u guys saying not to mess around and leave it as it is, or what? or should i get a new main board/video card/cpu prosessor/hard drive? because like i said i dont want to buy a new one and rather make my own computer. thanx to all those who have helped me so far appriciate it much

well it's good to see your ready to jump right in and build your own most are to scared or timid to do so, now you can get to save hundreds of dollars and learn in the process but finally you need to answer the previous question what do you want to do with your new comp, and how much money do you have? what is your budget? with a figure we can start making configuration based on what you need and what money you have.

well first all my budget would be around 100$ every week or two week, depending on my work schedual because i dont want to put my entire pay check into it, i could put down about 200$ right about now, i dont want this project to be finished in about 2 weeks as u can tell with my money option isnt very high, but as for what i would like to do with my computer is be able to play some games, such as command and conquer generals "i own it right now but cant play it lol", or battle field 2, but mostly be able to search online with a good speed to it. nothing reat really but have about an average size computer.

you can get a athlon 64-bit 3000 for 146.00 venice core mind you
this motherboard is really good at 84.00 and has pcix
MSI K8N Neo4-F Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard
GIGABYTE GV-NX66T128D Geforce 6600GT 128MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card this is a good budget card at 154.00 will play all new games but you can go cheaper and get a 6200tc for 50.00 bucks but dont know how well it would play bf2. would not reccomend anything lower than 6200tc
2x 512mb of pc3200 ddr will run you about 100 bucks
case's can be had for around 50 bucks that include power supply
and you have hard drive mouse keyboards cdrom modem monitor so my option would cost you about 500 bucks which is steep but thats a 64bit processor with the venice core that runs cool so easily overclocked, motherboard future ready for dual core, also easy overclock options, pciex which is 'I guess' the future, a reaaly great video card that many love and it will play your games!
ps oh yea I found all this on newegg of course!

depends on whether you want amd or intel but as you play some games go with amd & go with socket 939 as socket 754 is being discontinued. you want ddr ram not sdram

you can always go cheaper though just my suggestion for a future proof, low budget gaming pc based on what you need. get a 6200tc and drop it to 400 if you will.

If you are REALLY serious about making it futureproof, I would save & get a decent MOBO, CPU, RAM, graphics card. I would put aside at least $600-$800. Otherwise you WILL just regret it. I know it will take a while.
It took me 2yrs to build the PC I wanted, through trial & error. I now know what I would buy.
I can assure you that you will reap the rewards with a little patience, & also feel proud that you did not do a cheap & nasty job.
You WILL want to play your games with a good PC, it truly makes a world of difference. GUARANTEED!

don't even touch it as it uses same ram as what you have now but can't put newer ram in at all. has 4x agp so can't put a new 8x agp because of voltage differences. can only put intel nortwood core cpu on the board so is dead end. is also missing the bracket that is attached to the motherboard that the cpu heatsink & fan clamps to so will have a hell of a time to get a replacement as it comes with the board. what would you do with the other 4 boards, sell them off??
