my current system:

xp media center 2005
p4 lga775 2.8ghz 1mb l2 cache 800fsb ht
2gb dual channel pc3200
37gb raptor sata (boot)
200gb ide hd
250gb ide hd
128mb 9800pro

i use this mainly for video editing, adobe premiere pro 1.5

i have been thinking of upgrading to 64-bit, xp x64 professional. im not familiar with performance of 64-bit so i was asking ur opinions of how my video & music editing would differ from what i have now, gaming, everyday tasks, etc. i was thinking of getting an athlon 64 3000+ venice. would that increase performance? and would the 3000+ be comparable to the entry P4 64-bit processors in the price range? ive had my eye on the amd because i can get the processor and mobo for the price of a 64-bit p4 processor.

so basically, would i benefit from upgrading to 64-bit processor and 64-bit xp from what im currently running? and if the answer is yes, which processor is better:

if i switch to amd-
amd athlon 64 3000+ venice / 939 / integrated fsb

if i stay p4 lga775-
intel p4 630
intel pentium d 820 smithfield dual core

honestly, and if you have the money, I'd check out www.alienware.com I know that these are gaming PC's but these things are great! And they look nice too!

bizzE, you should check to see if the video editing software will work with a 64 bit board with XP64. Some don't, now, but all will be updated in the future, I am sure.

do not even consider an alienware machine, very overpriced

as GrandpaBW said make sure your software is compatable first

alienware is out of the picture. i build all my pcs. as far as i know, adobe premiere pro works fine on 64-bit. and to upgrade to 64bit im only planning on spending $250 at most (up to $250 for p4 emt64, or $250 for amd processor & motherboard). from researching i see there isnt much benefit from upgrading to 64-bit. my 2.8ghz doesnt seem that fast anymore, so thats why i was thinking of going 64 hoping it would be that much better. im looking for speed and stabililty. i guess i should wait then right? unless you guys think upgrading to one of the entry level 64bit p4s or athlon64s would be faster than what i have now. and i could dual boot 32bit windows and 64bit.

i have: intel Pentium 4 520 Prescott 800MHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor

check to see what is in msconfig/startup you don't need & check for spyware that can knock a p4 down to a p1 in speed

i run adaware once or twice a day. i unloaded a lot of processes from msconfig/startup and i think thatll speed it up. we'll see after restart.

would 2mb l2 cache be that much better than my 1mb? or the dual core 2x1mb l2 cache?

you might not see the performance difference for the cost. check with local stores to see if they have those set up so you can see the difference not hear from them the difference
