I use decrypter and dvdshrink on occasion, but from the get go I have had dvdexpress and now I use Anydvd with that. I've burned hundreds of movies and besides the occasionly skip or pause, my movies look good and sound good. I understand that decrypt and shrink r free programs, but over the past few weeks I've read in these threads about multiple different programs people use to burn movies. Some programs do it in 15 m. all they way up to 4 hrs. I was just wondering if I'm missing something. All this decrypting, authoring, moving this file here and taking that file out and then eventually, if everything went right, burning the movie. Is all that making for a more superior dvd or do people find what they like and stick with it. Not at all trying to say my way is better, just curious. I'm all for making the best back-up possible. I also wanted to add that I just have your basic picture tube tv and average surround sound. If I had a hd tv and such would the picture quality and sound be different and noticable by using a one click program?

Some people do reauthor and tweak to get the best possible quality backup. I am viewing my DVD's on a 52 inch HDTV, so, yeah, I want a good copy. Keep in mind, though, unless you are viewing on a BIG screen, or doing the notorious scans, or zooming in 150 - 200%, you would probably never discern a difference in quality between Decrypter/Shrink and the myriad of other combinations in use out there as long as you use quality media.
I use Recode2 a lot now. That is just a preference to be familiar with another program since Shrink and Decrypter have no support now. If I were you, I wouldn't worry at all. IMO, Shrink/decrypter is the backbone of the backup game right now!

decrypter and shrink are a great combo, so are dvdxcopy xpress and AnyDVD. if those are doing the job right now, there is not need to change or get something else. don't be too in love with speed, for it increases the chances of errors specially during the burning process.
Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect.

I have been burning movies for about 4-5 months now and I use 2 basic combos. The 1st. combo I use is AnyDVD & CloneDVD2, and the 2nd. is DVDecrypter & Shrink. I have on a couple of occassions used Nero. I use the 2 combos because they work well for me -- only 1 coaster after I got a good burner, and I use good media (maxell & verbatim).
I'm almost afraid to try something else because I might jinx my burning. I know that sounds dumb, but I'm happy with what I use. I do have a lot of curiosity about some of the other proggys, but haven't tried them yet.
BTW, there are some great guides on here and some super smart dudes (plus at least 1 "dudette").

Boy oh boy now thats a hell of a question...
Therer are so many different combinations that can be and are being used by so many different people it is crazy. I would say what ever you like best and works for you the easiest. Not any one program or combination is going to work the same for every single person because there are just way to many variables out there. In other words what works well for you may not work for others. Example So many times I see posted on here that someone cant copy a particular movie using Decrypter & Shrink and the response they get from another member is this: "I did it with Decrypter & Shrink" OK so it worked for one person but not the other, and that statement really doesn't help anyone. I say find what works best for you (experiment) and use that method :-)
For me though I strive for the best Quality picture possible and IMO this can usually only be done by backing up the main movie only to a DVD5 disk no matter what program you use. This means little to no compression of the movie itself which equals quality! If you have to have the extras I would suggest you put them on another disk. Now thats just my opinion and I realize some people actually like the menus and extra junk on there disks.
Cheers

My proggys and method of choice are dvdd/anydvd, dvdrm, rb/cce, and Nero for 90% of my backups because I like to keep a functional menu, the movie (of course), bloopers, deleted/extended scenes, and sometimes the making of. I edit out all the previews, trailers, warning screens, and adverts. My trimmed and polished folders are between 6000 and 7000 mb so to retain the best picture quality possible w/o useing DL media I normally use rb/cce and batch process overnight unless I'm in a hurry then I use dvdcopy3 which is second only to rb/cce for video quality IMHO and is one of the fastest (if not the fastest) encoder/transcoders.

1 click dvd with AnyDVD running in back. its just too easy. put the movie in one burner and put the blank in the other and click start. thats it. come back in 20 to 30 mins and ur done, and the quality is pretty good too. yeh i thought it was too good to be true myself but seeing is believing.

Yeah I would really like to meet the author of 1clicktoDVD as I am sure so would the guy that created DVD Shrink seeing how all he did was rip off Shrink and package it with a little different interface and then sell it... What a crook I wouldn't waste my money on that proggy just for that reason alone... Basically all he did was take Shrink and make it idot proof :-) and no I am not calling anyone here an idiot..
OK done ranting now :-)

Dekrypter with DVD43 in the background, always to an external hd. Then Nero recode 2, or, [I know I'll catch it for this], the stand alone program, Roxio easy dvd copy revA . note; not the one that comes with 7.5. Either of these programs will allow you to copy from the file, just the movie, and none of the extras. This usually means very little or no compression. Roxio just will not burn faster than 4x, and the average is usually around 2.5x to 3.5x. Nero will consistantly burn at 8x, but at this point in my life, an extra 5 minutes burning just ain't important. I have been using these combos for about a year now, and the only problems I have, are when I'm screwing around trying to make them better.

(a) InterVideo DVD Copy 3 with DVDIdle Pro or DVD43 - this is my top choice for long and good movie only. It produced great quality pictures.
(b) DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink - this is my 2nd choice and mostly use on ordinary movies for backing up. It's super easy and free.
(c) Nero Recode 2 and DVD Decrypter or DVD43 - my last choice for backing up movies, if only I don't use either (a) and (b).

I use DVD Rebuilder and CCE for all my backups and get full disc. Not any loss in quality that I can tell whatsoever.

to bbmayo, i think we had a talk about this topic once, it is NOT 1clickdvd that is a rip off oshrink; it is dvd cloner2 that is the rip off of shrink. 1clickdvd copy is simply great, at least my 42 inches TV says it is.

i'm easily pleased, i use Shrink like there's no tomorrow, Decrypter for the odd film Shrink doesn't handle, and Nero to burn. I only ever do movie only as not interested in all the padding you get on DVDs. I don't feel the need to try anything else yet, and if i did want to i've got a wealth of info from afterdawn members to search thru; or i'd not try the other programs myself, and just rely on others' experience with the other progs by reading about them instead.
I mainly buy older films i've missed over the years, so Shrink will see me thru for a very long time to come, eventually i'd buy Anydvd i guess..

Ditto Creaky!
I like to try different programs so I can answer questions here with some experence with the program(s) in question.
for backups I use or have used:
Shrink/Decrypter
Shrink/Nero
Decrypter/Shrink/Nero
Decrypter/Recode2
DVDFabDecrypter/Recode2
DVD X Copy Gold (My first DVD program, back when I was a newbie!)
DVD x Copy Xpress(" ")
AnyDVD/CloneDVD
Isobuster/Ifoedit/Recode2
DVDFab
SmartRipper
My standard burning technique is to use Shrink then open Nero Burning ROM and burn at 4X to Taiyo Yuden 8X media.

Well I cant say for 100% certainty the 1clickDVD is still using the Shrink engine in there newer versions as I havent tried those but I know for a fact they used Shrink in there older version and I even have a picture of it posted here somewhere I just can't find it right now and havent really got the time to look for it right now. I am willing to bet they are still using the Shrink engine though they just got a little smarter and are hiding it from you now :-) Like I said before though if you are happy with it and it works for you more power to you! :-)

My personal fav is AnyDVD and Recode 2. Reason: fast, simple & nothing stored on hd - only temporarily. I like having a fully functional menu along with deleted scenes so I make a still image of what I don't want.
I plan on trying DVD Rebuilder and CCE - just need to find a little more time to play with it before I buy.
I've used 1click DVD and X copy plat - uninstalled both.
For harder to rip discs/backups: Decrypter and Shrink.

I have a list of progs that I personally enjoy. FabDVD Decrypt or Decrypter/ with RebuilderPro(CCE/QuEnc/HC-Hanks Encoders) burn either ISO/or video files with Nero or CopytoDVD! I use that method for movies that are 2 hrs. 15 minutes plus! I also use dvdreasy (HC encoder)/ISO image/Nero Burn. For 2hrs. or less I use clonedvd2, DvdXCopy Platinum (& Express), dvdcloner 2, and yes I will use 1 click (once in a while!). I have found that ReJig Transcoder produces a very sharp picture even with long movies. Very impressive and it is a stand alone prog. that is easy and much quicker than rebuild or dvdreasy. I still will use shrink (not often), not against it at all, just found that other programs produce for my system (55 inch 16X9 widescreen HDTV) so quality of picture of of greatest concern. The champ has to go to Rebuilder Pro with CCE. jdobbs and the entire team has provided an exceptional product that produces stunning results for my back-ups (Indistinquisable from the original)! Region-Free and AnyDVD are in the background! I have burned 400 back-ups and had 8 coasters (burned them to fast!) I burn at 2x and 4x speed max.! I even make back-ups of the back-ups so that each room has a copy! No problems!

Quick note! I love the joining feature of DVD2One for moives that spread across two disks! I backed up my copies of the extended Lord of The Rings series. I burned each movie on a DL verbatim Dvd+R and they look great. No longer have to get up and change the disk just to see the rest of the movie. I know it sounds kind of lazy, but with the technology today changing disks should not be part of the process.
