I'm looking into building a system from scratch(First timer here) and I narrowed it down to these processors to what I can afford. On a scale of 1 - 100, how would you rate these processors. And for the AMD, what is the difference between the 3500 Venice, Winchester, Clawhammer? Would spending a lil bit more for the 3700 be worth it for the extra performance?
I plan on using my PC mostly for heavy multitasking and movie encoding, gaming isn't high on my priority list.

Also, which mobo would you recommend in getting for that specific processor? My budget for a mobo is around 150.

i am not going too awnser all ur qs (cbb) but for multi tasking the pentium d is the best (dual core cpu)

AMD single cores are not known as good multitaskers, but best for 3D and gaming. The San Diego 3700+ will only offer a noticable performance boost in games as well, the only difference between them is the Venice has 512kb l2 cache and SD has 1mb. (BTW, if you get AMD at all, make sure to go Venice or San Diego core) Also the 3500 isn't known as a good OCer, you'd be better off with a 3200 if you plan on OCing.

Anyway, I would wait another few weeks until the cheaper AMD dual core comes out, the x2 3800+... 2 3200 Venices on one die (This is what I'm doing... my main concerns are gaming and multitasking)

But that's just me, if you want multitasking you'd be best with the PD 820 or the x2 3800+ ($375). Go to Anandtech.com and look under motherboards/CPU and look for the benchmark comparison/review between the two.

Good stable MB that likely won't give you and probs setting up: ASUS A8N-SLI

Don't know about Intel

Hey Rapoman, between the Venice and San Diego, which one is "better"?
I plan on having my system completed around mid-August will the cheaper AMD be out by then? Will existing mobo's for AMD be good enough for these newer, cheaper AMD dual cores?

The x2 3800+ is due out on August 1st at $375 according to a couple websites, aceshardware.com I believe has some info.

512kb L2 cache x 2

And yeah, existing MBs will only need a BIOS update to be compatible with dual core
