Do I have a poor machine or what? I installed my new 109 drive and flashed it with new firmware 1.55 from Pioneer website. I burn with Nero but when using DVD-R discs (Ritek) it now only will burn a data disc at 4x. Also makes a-lot of noise at times when burning. Wondering whether this is all due to the drive? DMA is enabled and all settings in Nero are correct. Any help appreciated.
I have the AO9 drivewith the same update and I also burn using Nero. Several things that you should check.
1. Make sure that DMA is selected for your drive(s).
2. Make sure that nothing else is running that is also accessing the drive. InCd, etc.
3. Make sure that you have pre selected your drive speed before burning starts.
I have been burning successufully for a few years and the only problems I have ever had were due to poor media, bad source discs, and occassionally errors of my own doing.
I use Decryptor (latest), Shrink (latest), DVDfab Decryptor (latest), Nero Recode (latest). I have never posted here, but I have always found answers to my questions. Your topic has been covered many times before. Maybe not the exact post, but close enough for you to do a search and find a resolution. You are in the right place though. These folks are awsome.

is this drive mounted correctly?
are you putting stick-on labels on these discs prior to burning?
Weird that it will only burn data DVDs. When you pick DVD-Video files does it give you an error?
Do you have VOB files you are trying to burn or just 1 ISO file?

As stated, DMA is enabled and no I do not have labels on the discs. I am using 8x DVD-R Ritek brand for which I have never normally had any problems. I have just uninstalled inCD from Nero. When burning with Nero the 'cancel' button is greyed out which leads me to believe that Nero is not working 100% correctly and will have to wait for an update. All other settings are correct. The 109 is an upgrade from the 105 I used to have and which was a superb machine. I am most concerned at the noise the machine makes when it does manage to burn at 8x.
The Nero cancel button being grayed out is normal, happens to me too.
I agree, I'd be most concerned with the drive making noise like that. Drives will make noises like that if they are not mounted correctly (ie not screwed in). No sticky labels on the discs? That can throw discs off balance sometimes.
