Iam lost in a IT networking nightmare

using:

zonelabs pro firewall:(open tcp ports between 6881-6999)
norton anti virus:
bt engine 4.5:
bittorrent 4.0.2:
on a windowsXP platform:(I unchecked the XP firewall box)

i have tryed typing my default gatway I.P address into my web browser but nothing comes up but cannot find i have checked and double checked the right number and used http://blahblah but still nothing is this because i don't have a router
my connection is straight from pc to a pace ntl digital tv 1mb broadband box is the router in the digi box or the computer?
and how would i find what router iam using, iam a bit new to all this
but have been looking for the answer for a week and still downloading the same shitting file at no more than between 1-30kbs

i need a hero help

If you would like to find out your IP, click Start button then Run. Type cmd and press enter. In console type ipconfig and press enter.
