avi or mpg to dvd-r format

can anybody explain if and how i can create a dvd-r format cd from either an mpg or avi file. i want these dvd's to play on most standalone dvd players.
NOT a VCD but a DVD-R.

If you have nero, visit their site. They sell an mp2/dvd plug in that converts mpg to dvd format. I've had some problems with it though, for one I'm not getting the sound to work though I know it's there. And it has not worked flawlessly... use rw's not r's until you know it'll work.
