MOST people will say Plextor is the KING of dvd burners, but i don't think one can be had for $60, they are great burners, but are pricer than most burners...about $130 last time i checked :)

but, to fit your price range, i would suggest either a pioneer dvr-109 or a nec 3520a (or new model, the nec3540a)...both those can be had for less than $60 from newegg.com~ i own both of them and they are great for the price, in my honest opinion~ :)

using the most updated manufacturer firmware will give you good results, but if you are familiar there are hacked firmwares out there to remove riplock, bitsetting, etc...

hope this helps a little bit to find one suitable for you~ good luck

For under $50, you can get the nec 3520 and my favorite- Benq 1620 at Newegg.com. They have excellent compatability if you play those backups in many different stand alones. Some of my other burners couldn't even come close on stand alone compatability. I know the benq can be book-typed to dvd-rom. The booktyping feature helps with compatability. The nec should have that feature, but I am not 100% sure. Pioneer 109,last I heard, does not have that feature, but is still a great burner.

I've got 2 benq's and a new hp lightscribe. If that lightscribe's compatability on my stand alones give me any problem, then I'll slap in my extra benq 1620 in a heartbeat.Well over 1500 burns on that one and many on the fly.It is sitting here waiting for that hp to give it a chance.

Firmware, It is the programming on your burner that tells it what media it will burn and how fast it will allow you to burn them. It's usually the manufacturers recommendations on which manufacturer's ID code it will accept. Some burners firmware are updated regularly, while others aren't. New media coming out, like the 16x speed, may cause trouble with older burners accepting them, therefore an update may be needed.

I'm really interested in that Lightscribe feature. Gives the DVD a nice finished look. My Pioneer 109 has been flawless and has a lot of support. I burn -R so I don't worry about booktyping. I'll probably get a HP(LS) for my next burner just to write on the wrong side of the disc.
