My burner is a Pioneer DVR-105, and am using Nero5.5.9.17 software, and Memorex blank dvd?s.
Being kinda new to this stuff, I have been trying to backup the simple dvd-5 single layer movies ( Days of Thunder as example). Everything fits on one dvd, so the only thing that has to be done is to rip (smart ripper), get sectors (ifoedit 095), than burn (nero 5.5.9.17).
Well, after following guides exactly, I test using a Memorex DVD-RW, and the movie plays perfectly from start to finish in my Pioneer as well as RCA stand alone.
Now that I am satisfied with my test, I burn to a Memorex DVD-R. Using the burned DVD-R in the same dvd players as I did the DVD-RW, and the movie freezes about three quarters of the way thru.
This has been the result of 3 attempts using different movies each time. Movie plays perfectly using the DVD-RW, but freezes when I use DVD-R.
I hope someone can help. Thanks

Hmmm, I have the same setup as you and I have burned 20+ dvd's without a problem. Is your player a RC5240p?

Could be media problem as malum states or even nero. However try this one.

If u are doing single layers ie. dvd5 then try dvd decrypter out.available as freeware in the downloads section here.

Use ISO READ mode, this creates an image on ur hdd.
Once complete, use dvd decrypter again but this time in ISO WRITE mode.
Select the image you previously made and burn back.

I use this method for ALL my dvd5 backups and also backups of backups.

Hope this helps.

If u still experience problems then I would probably say as malum - media issue.

...............PIO is no go, DMA all the way...............
Beware of the Pixies - they move in over night and turn your life upside down

As it turns out, both malum and baabaa are correct. Just got Ritek DVD-R and DvdPro DVD-RW media. The Dvd-Pro DVD-RW does not work at all with nero, but works perfectly with DVD Decrypter. After about 40 minutes of burning with nero, I get the Burn Failed message. The Ritek DVD-R works great with both nero and DVD Decrypter.
I guess that I have to search for a burning program that is a bit more reliable (at least on my equipment) than nero.
Playback is excellent on my Pioneer, RCA and Denon stand alones.
Thanks to both for your help.

I've changed over to Prassi from Nero, which produces discs that are far more compatible

And I changed from Nero to RecordNow MAX which has completely cleared up any problems I used to have.
