Most versions prefer DVD-R. Mid to later versions will accept DVD-R or DVD+R. I personally use +R on mine as I get better results on my v7 PS2. So, to be safe, buy good quality DVD-R.

My personal experiences have shown for my PS2 that Verbatim and Sony are the best. There are others that swear by some japanese maker that I cant remember the name of. I believe they make Fujifilm media. Others may chime in here for their opinions.

Even though my PS2 system can easily play both formats -- DVD+R(s) for me all the way. I prefer the FUJI/TY 8X DVD+R, Maxell 8X DVD+R and SONY 8X DVD+R (all MADE IN JAPAN)- they all plays flawlessly on my PS2 v9.
