hey peeps,

Thanks a zillion to all of u out there helping noobs like me. I have no clue of how a modded PS2 works until I found out from my boss who plays a modded XBOX. After a lil bit of R&D I found out that PS2s can also be modded. First I thought that I would mod myself, but after reading all the complicated steps I decided not to blow the PS2 on my face with my experimenting!....well anyways, my question was, I am planning to buy a modded PS2 for about 350 bucks and would like to know if it can play all those backed up games. Is it easier to back up any PS2 game that I rent from blockbuster...( Infact until, recently I did not know that DVDs can be backed up and after I found that out I have been collecting my fav movies backing up DVDs from BB...I did not know pirating was so much fun ..heheee)...Also to mention about the PS2 I was going to buy...It has a V12 DIODE FIX Chip it seems..more info can be found out here http://www.modchipnow.com/product_info.php/products_id/124?osCsid...

I ask of you experts to suggest me if it worth buying a modded PS2!!

Thanks much for ur time

getting a premodded ps2 is not a bad idea but, if you spend 30 dollars you could get swap magic, and not have to install a mod chip. just get a fliptop cover. if you are good at soldering just buy a modchip.

I have a modded ps2. 350 sounds a bit steep for a modded unit. Most chips average about 40-50 bucks, and you can get it installed for about the same; you shouldn't spend more than 100 bucks for it installed. when you add that to the 150 that ps2 goes for, your original price sounds a bit high. Google a place called Norcalmods; they're very reliable.

the chip I got is called the Infinity Matrix, and it has all the bells and whistles. it plays everything.

Also, don't try it yourself unless you solder on a regular basis. Not worth the headache.

There are other chips like the Neo2 that have the basics and are a few dollars cheaper. If you're already spending 100 bucks, 10 dollars up or down shouldn't make a difference, so splurge and get the better chip.

Have you considered buying an older ps2 that can have a hard drive installed inside? this way, you don't ever have to change disks when you want to play. the game's already on the hard drive. The new slim ps2 cant have that done, i've heard: no room.

PS: Oh and by the way, talking about PIRATING is a no-no. a lot of the moderators frown on it. These forums tend to discuss the "how-to's" of backing up (legally, of course) movies and PS2 games you OWN, since you should be entitled to protect your investment;)

Oquela,

Wonderful! That was quite informative... Well actually, I was trying to weigh whether to buy it for 325 or do something like you suggested. But I dont see there is much of difference...so anyways, I might end up buying from "Modnow" guys. But what do you suggest the modchip they have...Is it worth the price??. Will it play all the backed up games(I will be using memorex and I read somewhere in this site that memorex backed up games give trouble playing!!) Please advise...

I dont want to take any risk buying a non modded PS2 and try something like swap magic which has a success rate of 70-80%!!

If you get the neo mod chip you need a gameshark or an action replay to play ps2 backups, but the ps1 backups will play fine. Infinity Matrix is the best modchip.

@jammerrule

Where did you get the statistics from that swapmagic only works 70-80% of the time.
I ahve around 80 working backup games.. there have only been 2 games that haven't worked with swapmagic so far, these were splinter cell pandora tomorrow and ghost recon 2.
I make that a success rate of about 98% for me...although my maths might be a little off here. But even if the next 20 games I try and burn fail, I would still ahev a success rate of around 80%.
But if you want to go the modchip route that's your call... theres nothing wrong with a modchip, in fact the DMS4 LITE or PRO models are supposed to let you play DL backups too. so if you go that route, opt for the dms chip..around $80 I think but worth it by all accounts.
good luck

lol the guy wants a modchip, so let him get a modchip and stop telling him to get swapmagic! If he wanted swapmagic he would have said. I did have swapmagic but got tired of it, so got mine modded professionally and it is awesome.

Anyway, jammerrule, like people have said the DMS4 Pro is one of the best chips around. You can download upgrades off the web, burn it to a CD-R and put it in your PS2 and it will update the chip. The Matrix Infinity also has the same features. And there has actually just been a chip released by DMS that is solderless. Not sure of the price, but I hear it is pretty easy to install etc, you may want to look into that.

yep mrlip, that is the one that i was saying about in my post, around $80.
wasn't trying to influence him about what to get, just didn't know where he got his facts about the success rate of swapmagic.. like you said it's up to him what he gets, just wanted him to have all the facts so he can make an informed decision.
good luck jammerrule in finding what you want, and BACKING UP your original games of course, lol.

People,

Thanks a bunch for all the replies...

@Paddymail
Regarding the stats - I have read in somewhere in the thread on this site. I did not make it up or somein'. Yes I totally understand that my assumption can be wrong, but you know it is just my fear that after I buy all that stuff and "back up" a game and it wont play when I pop it in. I sometimes have a hunch and somehow it works on me quite often :)... so anyways, I decided to buy a modded PS2 (lol). So is there a place where I can get a "non-refurbished DMS-4 modded PS2"....and hey please dont think I am cocky for not taking your advice on getting swap magic. Once again thanks so much for all the time you guys are spending

@Jammerule,
I've always been told Ritek media at 2x was the best, and so far, so good. Modchipnow doesn't say which chip is going in; I hope you don't have to send it to Hong Kong for the mod (which is why they'd probably charge more)

You may want to email them to figure out what you're getting.
