Hello, I am totally green when it comes to networks. My buddy who lives down the street has DSL. If he stands outside my house he can get a signal on his laptop. We came up with the idea of splitting the cost and sharing the signal. I am not sure what I need to do. What I want is to be able to run three computers inside of my home off of the signal. Can I place an antenna on my roof that is connected to a router that will then send a signal to my pc's inside the house? Would I need to run wires from the router on the roof to each of the pc's or would I need wireless cards installed in each unit? Would I be able to share printers and scanners with this type of system? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

You may want to have a look at this thread http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/205082

There are a few replies in there that might help you out.

Even though you will both be sharing the cost I don't believe the Cable company would like what you are doing to much...

Sorry for the double post. I thought my original post was in the wrong place, so I posted again in this forum.
I am not trying to rip anyone off. I have read stories of Neighborhood Networks, and thought I could do the same. I just don't know how to go about doing it.

It's a little obvious you need either USB recievers or wireless card for the other machines

My dad is in a neighbourhood where they cannot get broadband wired directly.
They have a wifi connection onto his estate.
Then around the estate there are access points dotted around and all the neighbourhood wifi into the broadband via the access points.
Of course with the access points, you will need wifi cards for the PC's you wish to hook up either PCMCIA or PCI depending on whether you are talking about desktops or laptops........................

...............PIO is no go, DMA all the way...............
Beware of the Pixies - they move in over night and turn your life upside down

snoland;

easiest to try if you put a usb reciever on your computer and check for "Networks Detected", the network that I have set up can go for a block and a half. I can detect three different networks,but obviously have mine decrypted so as to avoid some one hacking in
