You sure the SM disc isn't a copy, cause they can't be a copy!. It must be an original or it don't work. Other than that it sounds like someting odd if it's not your SM beign a copy. Are ya sure your doing it right?.
And da SM instructions are quite a load of bulls**t!, it took me a while just tryna work out what the hell it was mentioning about.
I have this problem, I have a patched pro evolution soccer 4, and Batman Begins on NTSC import, I have a PAL system with Swap Magic 3.6. It does it with EVERY disc I put in, even vallid UK bought ones
Just in case you havnt tried it, when using Usa disk, you have to change Swap Magic to NTSC. Just keep pressing x on the option to change it between, normal, PAL and NTSC.
I have backed up, return of batman. And it didnt require backing up.#
Try just a plain read/write with DVD Decrypter and see if that works.
p.s Make sure you have selected 4x for the burn speed and use a reliable burner like Nero Burning Rom, Select Iso, if you have just an Iso file, or if you have a load of files and folders you need to use the DVD-ROM(UDF/ISO) tab.

Thanks for the help dude, but I have tried everything ;) the import I got looks a bit weird though... It doesn't say PS2 on it anywhere on the disc or the cover :S
