Why can't DVD recorders with HDs store MP3s and JPGs?

Why are so many DVD recorders with hard drives unable to store MP3s or JPGs on the hard drive? If they could, they would be the ideal home archive for video, music and photos.

Most of them can play MP3/JPEG discs, but will not store on the hard drive. This sounds suspiciously like a legal impediment (rather than a technical one).

This potential legality issue is reinforced by the rapid proliferation of home media wireless routers (that will stream MP3s and JPGs from your computer to your TV). Since these cannot store the files, perhaps the routers sidestep the legal issue. This is a very convoluted way to do what almost any DVD recorder with a hard drive could do.

Anybody know if this is a legal issue?

Also, anyone know if there is a hack (firmware) to overcome this? The Panasonic DMR-EH50S will apparently let you store MP3s and JPGs on the hard drive, but only for "viewing once, editing or saving to a DVD". This would seem the easiest safeguard to overcome. This specific limitation of the DMR-EH50S also smacks of some legal blockade.

It is always maddening when the recording industry puts up such roadblocks to the technology. Remember how long it took to get DVD recorders?

i doubt there is a manufacturer made firmware to allow this...if they didn't want you to do it in the first place they probably won't in the future. I admit that is pretty lame, but at least you can store them on a DVD-R and play them. also, you can always get an audio streamer and just stream mp3s via network or wireless network directly to your stereo. I've seen ones selling for under $100. Even high end companies like Polk Audio make them

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:
