HI, any of you with the DRU-710A have had problems with the drive reading the LOTR EE discs? I'm trying to back up mine and the drive light just stays on for about 3 mins and you can hear some noises like if the drive was trying to reach an area of the discs it can't and some clicking. This happens with some DVDs, not too many though, and its frustrating me!!!! Any one has had any problems with these discs or similiar? Ever since I bought the drive it been picky with a few discs and does this even after upgrading the firmware. Do you think if I downgrade the firmware it might have a chance of working? I want(s) to try it but can't find a site with old firmware. Right now I have BYX4. See, another things is that I did back up disc one of the FOTR but now it doesn't even read it (original disc) although it does read the copy. I did a search and couldn't find much about the problem in the forums. The drive writes with no problems.

i have the same drive as you, but i think the problem lies with a "bad pressing" of your LOTR EE disc~ :) i use the BYX4 firmware as well with NO problems at all~ if your drive can play a COPY of it, but not the original...i point the finger at the original (bad pressing)...try to get a replacement disc if you can~ problem SHOULD be solved.. :)

Hi, the thing here is that all 3 EE do the same thing. They were not purchased at the same time or in a packaged, just individually. I have emailed Sony support but they wrote back to me saying to update my CONTROLLER under the DEVICE MANAGER. They said it should work as new but no luck, just tried one of the movies and down't read it. The only thing it does when the light goes off, it turns the drive to a CD-ROM DRIVE in my computer. Hmmm, what's a boy who wants to back this up to do? :( I wonder if its a bad drive. I'll try to contact SONY through phone to see if they can help me out further. Thanks.

Luis.

P. S. If you have any suggestions let me know so I can try them.

@labertoss,

I'm with kivory on this one. It looks like you may have had a bad pressed disc. Anyways, can you play any other original or burned dvd movies beside LOTR EE? Can you burn an audio CD? If yes you can, then obviously it's not your DRU burner that's having the issue, it's something else.

I've had my Sony DRU 710A (BYX4 current firmware) since November 2004 and I have never encountered any issues regardless of backing up dvd movies or playing other regions dvds, including both PAL and NTSC format, and it seems to be working flawlessly.

I guess I can continue with support with Sony see if I can ask them to replace the drive. The problem is just with pressed discs and its usually feature loaded movies like these ones, although the loaded part I doubt has anything to do with it. It does burn CD-R and DVDs correctly. I was just able to play the first disc from FOTR and make a copy of that one, but now that one (original) isn't even read by the drive.

hmm...that is an interesting problem/issue that i have never encountered...might be time to deal w/ SONY for an RMA on that drive...i've had my dru-710a for well over a year now, hundreds of backups/viewing dvds later, have never heard of or experienced a problem reading the ORIGINAL, backups i've had problems reading some of them, but never the ORIGINAL as you stated...i wish you the best of luck...i don't know what else to suggest~

The problem here is that I do not have a DVD-ROM drive asides from the burner. What I am going to do is try to rip the disc on another comp and then transfer the file here. Hmmm hideous taks, gotta switch drives from one computer to another one. But well, let hope it all ends well. Thanks guys!!!!

What is an RMA number? I did some reasearch and found a guy who had a similiar problem, his 710a stopped recognizing DVDs and CDs. He said he called SONY and told them that a lot of people have been having the same problem and they gaved him an RMA and they would replace it with a 700a, or whatever the next model is. Personally I am very dissapointed and will be the last Sony drive I purchase. Next is Plextor.

contact where you bought it and they give you a Returns Merchandise Authorization (RMA)

best of luck w/ the RMA...i think your burner (drive) just went bad...honestly, i've had mine for well over a year and it still kickin'~ :)

as creaky said, RMA =Return Merchandise Authorization, you MUST make sure to get one before sending it back to SONY or wherever you bought the drive from...without a "RMA" number, you will not get ANYTHING in return once you send it back~

i think perhaps your 710a was just a bad batch from sony...that's my only other explanation...plextors are HIGHLY regarded as "king of burners" here, and even though i never owned one, that is next on my list when my other 4 drives die~ LOL..i have VERY stable pioneer dvr-109, nec 3520a, and a liteon 1633 (which is exactly this SAME SONY dru-710a, before it was rebadged "sony")

i would try the RMA w/ sony first before going to drop $130 on the newest plextor...if my hunch is correct...you just might be able to get reading/burning again once they replace the drive~ come back here and let us know if you decide to take that route...good luck~

Hi, I bought this thing at Best Buy, so to get the RMA I have to go to Best Buy and tell them the burner situation and they will/might issue me the RMA? Or do I have to talk with Sony to do that? I don't have the money to purchase a new burner right now so that is not an option, they have to take care of this one. I did a drive test today (as instructed by a new email from SONY) and everything passed. But the burning part of the drive is not a problem, its just the reading of factory pressed DVDs which should not be an issue at all. I'll keep you guys updated. If anyone has more input go ahead and let me know. Thanks guys!

take it back to best buy as there is a GOOD chance they will replace it on the spot, rather than waiting for a new one to come in by mail. :) best buy USUALLY honors the manufacturers warranty and will have a look at it before dealing with sony...

tell them the situation and be firm w/ them, not rude, just firm...don't let them send you home w/ no resolution and if they won't give you a direct exchange for same model number/drive; THEN contact sony for the RMA~ (that should be the last resort, best buy SHOULD exchange it for you)

good luck

I am with kivory on this, contact BestBuy and see if they will take the drive back. Use Sony as the last resort. I sent one back to the mfr and it cost me 30.00 in packaging and postage.

I bought the drive in December you think there's still a chance for them to consider returning it to them? I have the original receipt so there shouldn't be a problem proving to them that I purchased it there. I've checked the store and BB doesn't carry the 710A any more, there is only 720, will that maybe make them send me to Sony since they can't replace it with the same model or they usually will give me the 720? Any of you with experience of this?

it's less than a year old, and it doesn't work properly. take it back with the receipt and like the other guys said, just be firm but not funny about it and tell them you're entitled to a replacement.

if they don't currently carry YOUR model (the same one i have too) in stock, they SHOULD give you the 720a, they can't go down in model, but should offer you something of EQUAL OR GREATER VALUE...they would NOT give you a lower model~ :) i've had experience with this a few years ago...the store i bought from no longer carried my particular model in stock, so rather than being a pushover, they just gave me the next model UP and sent me on my way, i was pleased to say the very least~ :)

just bring your receipt...SOny has 1 year warranty~ you are WELL within the warranty period...you SHOULD be able to walk out w/ the dru-720a..good luck buddy~ :)

i did just this with my current burner. last year i had an optorite drive that was playing up within 1st year of purchase, took it to pc world, they said go and pick any burner you want, so i picked the Sony, and i even got another full year's receipt so if it goes wrong or wears out within the year i'll be back there again..

man, great minds think alike creaky..hehe...before i got this burner (sony dru-710a), i TOO had a crappy optorite..i had the DD1205 (which is the 12x burner) HAHAHHA...i got them when they first came out being the fastest on the market at the time...this was BEFORE the 16x dual layer burners were introduced~ and the 4x burners were the LATEST thing~

unfortunately, mine died within a year and i got a RMA from an online store i purchased it from...but the policy of the retailer was EXACT EXCHANGE only...so, i was outta luck..got the SAME one sent to me, used it for a few months and decided heck with it, and got my sony, pioneer, and nec all in 1 months time~ :) just couldn't STAND optorite's poor quality anymore...the burns i made on it were good, but the actual DRIVE was poorly built...never regretted getting my GOOD drives...will continue to stick w/ sony, pioneer, nec and eventually i'll TRY a plextor once my others ones completely die... :)

Hey guys, thanks for the input. I'll take the drive today to Best Buy and try to be firm about it see how it goes. I'll keep you posted. This issue is really making me mad so they better take care of it-one or the other.

Okay, went to BB and they said "We only do exchanges if its within the first 30 days of purchase, since its past that period you need to call Sony." So I asked, "Is there anything I can do asides from talking to Sony directly with you?" She said "We can't do anything unless you would've purchase the extended warranty with the store and I see (looking at the receipt) you didn't so there is nothing we can do" That B&^%H. She wouldn't even look at me in the eye, as she was saying all this she was doing her work there. Last time I bought electronics from BEST BUY. I am sorry. (Don't know if I'll keep the promise but I'll try) Its not the fact that I didn't get the exchange that makes me take this decision, its the girl attitude. Then I got home and called Sony directly. The finally gave me an RMA number but the representative told me its just a testing RMA meaning that I will ship the item to them and they will run tests to see if it works properly and if it does they'll just return it to me, if it doesn't then they'll send me a new one. So I'll see what becomes of my drive. If they claim the drive to be working properly I swear I am going to raise hell on them and they better do something about it. For crying outloud, my mother's computer DVD-ROM drive is about 5 freaking years old and reads the DVD perfectly. (pause for 2 seconds) ...and that's all I have to say for now...

I had the same deal with the 710-Dru, many, many have had this problem. Bought the drive right after Christmas, the drive had more and more trouble and finally would not recognize a DVD by June. The drive worked like a charm for about 2 and half months.

I went directly through Sony Storage
http://sony.storagesupport.com/ live chat on this page..

Got on the Live chat thing told them my firmware was up to date and the drive did not recognize any dvd's, blank, burned, or originals. I then asked for an RMA to return the drive. The gave me the RMA and a support request number and instructions on how to return the drive to them. I mailed the drive to them following their instructions and recieved a 720A in the mail about 10-14 days later. I'd rather have had a different drive, but all in all the service was pretty good. But then again, you shouldn't have to do this 6 months after buying hardware.

If you got a cash emergency, you got a money mayday! Check into cash Cha Cha Cha Check into cash!
