@labertoss & spidahead,

I'm so sorry for your lost. Well, at least for "spidahead", Sony did gave you a replacement (720A). As for labertoss, Sony did gave you an RMA confirmation # right? I would send it(bad burner) right away because it usually takes them 2 weeks to send a new one back.

I guess Creaky, Kivory and I, we're the 3 lucky one with Sony burners. I've had mine since November from last year and I've never had any issues what-so-ever. However, one of my I/O Magic CD/DVD Writer did go bad, so I did called them up and talked to a Tech Support, which he knows nothing, then decided to give me an RMA number. I did received another one, but it's a different model (I just set it aside as of now).

Well, I hope that everything will go smooth for you (labertoss) in the mean time.

im sorry to hear of the bad attitude that you recieved @ best buy labertoss, i guess you are a gentle man, i would have thrown my "firm but not rude" attitude out the window and raised he!! on them~ :) but, i am glad you took the civil, mature way out...

as long as you have an RMA # from Sony and you explicitly explained in DETAIL to sony what was the problem, you will most likely get a new drive...i wish you only the best, it's a tedious process, but unfortunately, this is the only way to remedy the situation. as alkohol stated, guess i have been rather lucky w/ my Sony drive..i hope things work out for you.

Thanks guys, I'll be sending that drive back to Sony this week and I'll keep you posted. What is worse is that the drive stops reading more and more discs as the days go by.

Thanks I will. By the way I did mentioned I got an RMA, its just that the ^%$ch over the phone only issued a "TESTING" RMA. She said they would run a series of test and if the drive performs ok then they'll send the drive back to me. So I told her giving her a little attitude, lol, "What if it doesn't?" She said they would replace it. But who knows, lets hope so. I'll keep you guys updated. Still got some burning to do to before I send the drive maybe tomorrow.

I have a 710 A and it all went to s***. Ive had it for a while now and nothing reads anymore...no new releases from the last 6 months will not read. All the bonus dvd's read but the feature presentation disc will not. Sony support just ignores me and gives me the "cut and paste" answer. Ive rented 2 new release very week for the last 6 months....not one was readable with byx4. Even old movies remastered will not read or anything re-released.

Im so pissed but you say if its within 1 year of purchase they will replace it. I hope my receipt is within 1 year.

I'm glad to know I am not the only one. The drive also stopped reading the feature DVDs, it read 1 in 40 I guess. I sent it to them two days ago. It would just p$ss me off if the drive reads all of their freaking DVDs that they use to test and return it to me. But they will not get their way I can assure you of that. It makes me mad not to be able to back up my DVD's whenever I want. I'll check tomorrow with them to see if they've received it yet. I'll keep you updated.

WOO HOO! Guys, I just called SONY and I was upgraded to the 800A. They received it today and today they sent the new one. I asked the rep if he had any information on what was wrong and he said no but I should receive the drive on Monday by UPS.

LOMAX, give them a call, the number appears on your Warranty sheet. Explain to them the situation and ship it to them (you'll have to pay for shipping). I paid about 9.00 for shipping with signature confirmation. Let us know how it turns out.

Well, I received the drive today. I finished installing it, but what I am noticing when I try to use Decrypter to copy a movie into my harddrive it just reads it at about 2.5X. I did check the DMA settings and the are all right. Does you all's reading speed in the decryptor about the same of a lot higher?

try reading another disk.
i'm not aware of these drive being riplocked, ie being limited to reading at 2x or whatever speed some makers lock them to

congrats on the upgrade~ :)

i have yet to try the new 800a, so, i wouldn't know~, but, it just might be that particular disc resulting in the slow read speed, i can read my unencrypted discs @ 8x~:) sometimes faster ~

as creaky mentioned, i don't think there is a riplock on sony drives, mine reads fairly quickly...good luck labertoss~ :)

just gotta be persistent, it will always triumph in the end...

Well, I figured it out right after writing the post. I didn't change the derive config to SLAVE, so I had 2 MASTER drives. Everything fixed now. The drive is working pretty good. Something that I do note is different on this drive is that when I burn with Decrypter I choose 4X and it always burns at 6X, with the 710A I would be able to burn at 4X. The discs are the MAXELL Print to center MXL002. Could I assume that it is okay to write at 6X and get the same quality than 4X (quality-error wise) since the drive is a newer model?

@labertoss,

It's good to hear/know that you're back in bussiness now. I always burned my Maxell at anywhere from 6X - 8X successfully. On the other hand, I would not recommend anything faster than 8X though. So in other word, if you're 8X or under then you should be all square away.

((Just for fun now)) You should feel good and it's all good in the neighborhood home.
Like Lil Rob said; "I feel good, I feel alright, cruizing through my neighborhood on a warm summer night. I feel good, that's right... I feel good now. Summer day just siting around, but when the sun goes down I'll be ready to do some burning..."
