Hi, I just thought I'd add my experiences with Maxtor and Seagate.. I had a Maxtor stop working recently, because of overheating even in an open case. There was no warning, and it might be possible to retieve it. On the controller cards of the Maxtor drives the Mosfet for power regulation can overheat and I have since heard this may be common.

I've been using an old Seagate 5400 rpm on and off for years, seems very reliable. I currently use 2 seagate barracuda (computer is on constantly and its working very well), they run faster and cooler.

HMonitor tells me my Maxtor runs cooler than my WD but then it's smaller. 40GB Maxtor: 29ºC 200GB WD: 32ºC

You guys have opened up a whole new world for me. I never knew that this many people have had good experiences with Western Digital. I dunno why, but for some reason I have always considered WD to maufacture lower quality HD's but now I see that is not true. I will have to start buying WD HDD's because they seem to be cheaper(and of higher quality, according to u peeps) than other HD's.

Well, always take what us folks say with an air of caution, I mean not all of us have good experiences with any brand, and there will always be bad batches on occasions.

I myself however, am a devotee of Western Digital drives, and after having had thes two, I will soon be buying two more for a nice RAID setup. My WD drives aren't silent (particularly not the one in the external enclosure) but that's because they are 4-platter drives, so my Single platter Maxtor can't really be compared to them.

However, what I have noticed generally is that Maxtor drives seem noisiest (i could be wrong but that seems to be the case to me).

Either way, if you're going for WD, join the club!

I'll probably wait a bit, until my 250 Gig Seagate fills up:), which actually shouldn't be that long. I find myself ripping stuff to the HDD, and forgetting to reburn it because I don't even have enough time on my hands to reach for the DVD-Rs and pop one in...

My problem:

Download things as .rars
Find .isos inside
Extract the isos as data to the hard disk (easier)
then install the application

This leaves me with 4 copies of all the data i download, which for some programs can be up to 4GB. If I forget to get rid of all these (and let's face it, I have to kep at least 2 of them unless i Burn 1 of them on my really slow DVD-Writer) I've used 16GB of space for 4GB worth of stuff...
