All my local computer shops are closed and I want to do some research about setting up a wireless network to share the internet. If I have, for example, a DLink wireless router and a Lynksys wireless adapter will they work together? Or is it better to stick with the same brand? Also, as far as I know "g" and "b" are compatitable, but will only run at the slower speed (b?) - do I have that part right? Oh yeah, will having the second computer upstairs slow the connection down as the 2nd computer will be out of the line of sight of the router. Thanks guys.

It shouldn't matter if they are different manufacturers as long as the conform to the same standards. You should be able to use whichever protocol both devices support, even the higher speed as long as both devices support it. Where you run into trouble as far as speed goes is when you mix 802.11g and 802.11b clients. In that case you only get the speed of the slowest. As far as line of sight goes, that doesn't matter. It's wireless, not infrared.
