I've been burning DVD's and backing them up for quite some time now. I use DVD Decrypter to rip the movie to my harddrive then use DVD Shrink to compress the DVD and then use Nero to burn to a DVD-R disc. My media i use is Memorex DVD-R 8x. I've burned many movies before using this media and things have been fine but now of late when I burn a DVD using nero and play it, it seems to skip and freeze towards the beginning and througout the movie. All of the ripping and shrinking is working fine and the burns are completing successfully at all speeds (4x, 6x, 8x). Could this be a drive problem or what. I've run out of answers. Any help would be great!

Memorex are of very variable quality and made by multiple manufactuers and badged as Memorex.

They have a poor reputation as to quality/reliabilty by many members of this forum (try the seach function to see opinions re Memorex media).

Burning at lower speeds is normally more reliable (4X recommended).

Try some better quality media such as Ritek, Verbatim or TY.

As colw states try a better media and lower your burn speed, also check and make sure that your firmware for your burner is up to date.

I prefer Taiyo Yuden available online from

http://www.supermediastore.com
http://www.meritline.com
http://www.rima.com

All reputable dealers. Retail I go with Verbatim, Sony or Maxell, all have provided excellent burns.

Thanks guys I just put in a order for some Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R's from supermedia. I hope they are as good as everybody says they are. I'm just sick of seeing movies that I back up skipping and freezing all the time. Thanks again for the posts and the help!

Never had a problem with my TY's from supermediastore. I use either Verbs or TY's and have not had a problem, the only time I did was with Memorex and that made me repent my cheap ways.

Yes I found my way into the light, now I spread the word Memorex, thee sucks. There is no better feeling than being a reformed Memorex user, you now have the reward of all those flawless burns.

@bilg

very good decision indeed, i am in 100% agreement w/ my buddy mort and arniebear above, i've been "burned" by memorex in the past too (no pun intended), it was hard to believe that something so widely available was so poorly made...i've purchased thousands of TY media from supermediastore and i've never had a problem...best of luck w/ your future burns...im sort of an excessive blank media freak~ LOL this is my dept. of "expertise and experience" if you could call it that...hehe

hello Mr. Mort, sir...hehehe...took out the PC specs and just replaced it w/ my new siggy pic of the Extreme Edition p4 chip that i use...adds a little color to signature don't ya think? hehe

as of late, got lotta PM regarding particular parts on my PC and it started becoming cumbersome...so, i just took out the list of hardware i currently use.

just personal preferences..i would much rather speak about media than hardware...yes, i build all my own pcs, but, media is just more enjoyable to talk about~ :) Taiyo Yuden this...Verbatim that...you catch my drift...good seeing ya around Mr. Mort...have a good one.

Thanks for the chuckle. I knew you'd come back with something sophisticated but I was expecting a low blow. Yeah, I like the pic and understand your reasoning. Thanks for brightening my day a bit buddy. You know it's all in fun.
