I was backing up a DVD and I got a 'Syntax' error or something when dragging and dropping the files from the Video TS folder to my PC.

I have seen this a couple of times before but if I have the DVD replaced (as faulty) the replacement one works with no problems. Is it because the disc is scratched? I buy ex-rentals.

Software used:

AnyDVD (latest), Nero Recode 2, DVD Shrink, Windows Explorer for dragging and dropping when DVDs are smaller than 4.35GB.

Thank you in advance. :)

ok, I've never used Nero Recode, but I think it's basically the same exact thing as Shrink. Here's what you do in Shrink: forget about that drag and drop crap. Click Open Disc and find your drive that has the DVD in it. Then take it from there, you can reauthor if you just want the movie or leave it in full disc mode for everything. Remove any unwanted audio and subtitles and click the backup button.

What on Earth are you on about? I didn't ask how to use DVD Shrink.

What do you mean 'forget about that drag & drop crap'? That's an excellent method for backing up DVDs smaller than 4.35GB when using AnyDVD (it's a driver). In fact it's the best and fastest method. I get the feeling I know more about this stuff than you because of this comment.

If it's larger I just use Nero Recode 2 to compress it using Advanced Analysis and High Quality burning. Slow but good quality.

Then I just burn it using Nero Express or standard Nero Burning ROM.

Didn't you read my username? NotNew.

I know how to backup DVDs, I'm an advanced user. I know how to re-author or backup the whole DVD (which I prefer) and all that.

I know you're trying to help, but you've completely ignored my question and are telling me what YOU think I need to know.

I asked about 'Syntax' errors, not how to backup DVDs. I keep getting replies like this. I don't know what it is about the forums on this website, but everyone answers their own questions instead of the ones asked. This has happened at least 5-7 times on this website now. I never get this on other websites' forums, they actually answer the question asked. Very strange. I use these forums because this website's 'specialty' includes backing up DVDs.

Well, I now remember that it's a 'failed Cyllic Redunduncy Check', and learned that it happens on scratched discs, which don't play properly.

I'm not going to say thanks. You might think I'm being rude but I think you are being very patronising, especially with comments like 'forget about that drag & drop crap' when I know for a fact that it's the best method for backing up DVDs smaller than 4.35GB if you have AnyDVD running.

Bye then.

Thank you in advance. :)

I think you are being rude to someone who tried to help. IMO the best method to back up a file smaller than 4.3g is to use a straight copy with AnyDVD, or just use DVD Decrypter iso read and write. And syntax errors occur when you have put something together that the program does not understand, which can occur with your drag and drop method.

No, I'm not being rude, I'm just stating the truth, which people don't like. You share the same poor skills because I said "Well, I now remember that it's a 'failed Cyllic Redunduncy Check', and learned that it happens on scratched discs, which don't play properly." So not a syntax error.

Nothing to do with my Drag & Drop method. You say "syntax errors occur when you have put something together that the program does not understand, which can occur with your drag and drop method."

Why would Windows Explorer 'not understand' this? Dragging and Dropping is one of Windows Exlorer's features.

Please close this thread, I posted in this 'Advanced Users' section for a reason but it seems there are none here. Shame.

Bye.

Thank you in advance. :)

@NotNew - squizzle is a highly respected member of and has offered you good advice without patronising and i am gonna politely ask you to 'drag & drop' the attitude. Very few people here on afterdawn (if any) care about status i.e. we don't look down our noses to anyone, even if it does say Newbie under the username. What is taken note of by people such as myself is that on your second thread on afterdawn you have attacked a long-term member over a misunderstanding on your part.

If you did think he had a patronising attitude (which he didn't) you could have responded differently, however your statements

and

are not necessary and certainly not welcome around here.

I know NotNew is still reading this even though he got banned. I just read your first response to my post now and while I was reading I thought the same thing that got mentioned by someone else:

I've had horrible luck dragging and dropping DVD Video files onto a DVDR, and I'm expecting that if you used a real burning program you wouldn't get that "syntax error" which I've never seen using any burning software.

Don't you just love these folks coming in here and jumping on senior's/addicts who take some of their precious time to answer dumbass questions.

If you know more than they do, what the hell are you coming in here asking all the stupid people (as you are implying) how to fix your dumbass problem?

Man, the gonads some of these people have.

Myself, I'm very thankful indeed when someone offers me help. It is free advice folks. Take it and be thankful someone offered to help with your stupid problems without actually calling you stupid as they really should but don't because they have more respect for others and are not smartasses.

Count me in.

Truth hurts don't it? :)

It really ticks me off when people do this. Ask for help from others who are donating their free time to help them and all they get is smack talking in return. Some folks need to learn how to appreciate the simple things in life or else they will always go around having that big chip knocked off their shoulders.

I totally agree, this person was way out of line. Why bother to asks if you don't want to hear the answer. In essence why shoot the messenger. The answer to NotNew's problem is that it lies between the keyboard and chair and no other place.

It's always nice to hear that I don't have a clue what I'm talking about and that the one who argued with everyone here is the only one that's right, just because he calls himself "notnew." I guess that his name makes him a smarter person.

Yeah, ask a question to a problem they are having and then tell the person who answers, with a perfect way to help solve it I might add, they are full of it.

Come on people. If you don't want to hear the answer, don't ask the question. If you think you know it all, why ask. I learned many, many, years ago that you will learn a whole lot more by listening than you will talking. :)

darthnip, I will send you a bitching, whining, moaning, crying, complaining, pissy, mean, and just plain being a jerk PM if you promise not to ban me. We don't want you to feel left out. :)

Edit. It looks better when I put lot in front of more. :)

Mike
