Hi there i was just wondering about getting a router so i can use the internet on two of my home PCs and just wanted to know if the connection will be split if both computers are using the internet and also if one of the computers has to be on for the other to use the internet. Thanks for any help that you can give me.

A router kind of acts like a server. You will not have to have another computer on for the other to work. Your connection speed will not be lost at all infact it will more than likely improve. Not to mention you will have the added security that comes with having a router. The best suggesting I could makr to you is to go ahead and spend a few extra bucks on a wireless router now because you might not have wireless now but in a year or so you may decide to get a laptop. I have 3 PC's ran threw LAN line into my router and also 2 laptops running WiFi and almost all the time in the evening both of my kids and myself are on line at the same time and there is no difference in speed..

Hope that helps you out :-)

Do you mean this one?
Quote:
NETGEAR MR814NA IEEE 802.3iIEEE 802.3x Flow Control IEEE 802.11b Wireless Router - Retail

Frequency Band: 2.4GHz
LEDs: Power, Test, Internet, Wireless and LAN (connection, activity and speed)
Modulation: DSSS
Network Protocols: Static & Dynamic Routing with TCP/IP, VPN pass-through (IPSec, PPTP, L2TP), NAT, PPPoE, DHCP (client & server)
Ports: 1x10/100M WAN; 4x10/100M LAN
Security: 64/128-Bit WEP
WPA: No

Model #: MR814NA
Item #: N82E16833122011
Its just not very fast 11Mbps
Most are at least 54Mbps
But you should probably go with 108Mbs

its up to you though your PC that is pluggen into the router will still be pleny fast, but the wireless devices will be a little slow. You could go one model up and have 54Mbps data transfer rates :-)

just some stuff to think about :-0

Yeah that one is better for sure :-)

Any router will work though so don't be fooled by what they say is compatable with your subscriber. :-)

They will all have as fast as your internet provider will allow. A router will not slow down your connectivity at all
