Having installed a new Pioneer 109 and upgraded the firmware to 1.55 as recommended by Pioneer I cannot seem to burn at all. The files are cached and the burn process started but then all I get is the message 'communications failure'). I print the log file below. Any help appreciated:-

yes please remove your serial immediately, we don't want a lurker/someone else using your serial on here...
secondly...i would also change the media you are using, i have this same drive and my pioneer detests CMC MAG media~ Quote: Recorder: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-109, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: CMC MA - G. AE1
i would suggest using Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim as i've had great success with both of these media types~ :)
in terms of your "communications error" i would double check to see that internally, all the cables are properly connected and secure as well. your DMA settings are just fine...and i don't see anything that jumps out at me after my 1st read of your Nero log file.
also, newest firmware is 1.57, i was using 1.55 for awhile, but updated it to 1.57 when it came out earlier this month.
Recommended Media:

Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

I just bought the new 109 also. And kivory666's suggested media brands work great. I like Sony media also
I'm sorry to crowd Discmania's question (TY in advance for your tolerance) but posters on this thread may know the 109 pretty well.
One of my favorite movie burning programs does not allow me to set the burn speed ie it uses the speed rating of the blank media and the 109 will burn at up to 16X. I want to burn at 4x for stable, no-pixellation results and best player compatibility.
My question is: Does anyone know of a driver or utility or hack that will force the 109 to burn at 4X on faster rated media ?? Using 4X -R media is the obvious solution but 4X -R media is quickly disapearing from the market will soon be unavailable. BTW, all my stand alone home entertainment players and changers are JVC and JVC likes -R rather than +R and I don't want to change equiptment or burning programs.
Thanks & Best regards,
Whisperer

You cannot edit a post after someone has replied so I have informed management about the mistake.
The problem has nothing to do with media type. I suspect it is either my new 64bit motherboard and processor which requires more powerful wattage or the Pioneer drive itself - I will certainly download the latest firmware. All the internal cables are tightly fitted.

I stand corrected on that - have now removed the serial. It's been a while since I posted here (it obviously shows!!).

@ discmania
well, i would still reconsider your media choice, i am very familiar with this pioneer drive and wasn't assuming you didn't set it up properly, MOST people here will always argue that their choice of media is NOT THE PROBLEM, when 90% of the time, IT IS~ :)
i think the problem lies somewhere with, as you stated, the new 64 bit setup/processor and mb...usually with an upscale setup like that, your PSU (power supply unit) needs to be upped to stabilize your new powerful system. i'm currently using a 500Watt PSU for my setup as it's pretty powerful, it's still 32 bit, but, it requires a lot of electricity as im running 5 fans and a monster huge cooler w/ a geforce 6800 ultra~
anyways...not to get off topic, may i ask what is ur PSU currently? i recommend at LEAST a 400w for your new components...give that a go and see if your pioneer drive works after that...perhaps right now your system does not have enough "juice" to power your 64 bit processor and new motherboard...that just might be the case...
@ whisperer...
unfortunately, i personally have not found a program/hack/utility that will SET the burn speed @ 4x...i can easily burn my Taiyo Yuden 8x media @ 16x..but, i use Nero to set my burn speed @8x for my own backups...can i assume you are using Intervideo dvdcopy3? i use that program on occasion and i have not found a way to adjust burning speed as of yet either...if i ONLY use that program (from beginning to end), with nothing else to burn...ie. not switching to Nero or some other program for the actual burning portion of the backup...
i will have a look around and let you know if i find anything to set your burn speed @4x...let me know also if you find something too~ :) sorry, can't be much more assistance to you..i burn ALL my backups using Nero @8x~ that's just me...have a good one all~

Discmania:
Am I reading your log correctly(?) ... are your ripper and your burner sharing the same channel? If so, that can really mess up timing by causing the back and forth of data transfers to clash with each other if DVD drives are on the same cable. With the path the movie data travels (ROM-Drive >Cable >RAM >HDD >Processor/Cashe >RAM >Cable >Burner-Buffer >Writing), TIMING is VERY critical in the backup process.
My dedicated box is less "leading edge" than your rig. I may be off base with this so can anyone who knows Discmania's system configuration better and/or reads logs better than me confirm this and suggest a better drive channel arrangement for Discmania?
For example, my system is setup is as follows:
Win2000Pro, SP4.
Supermicro P6DBE MB, latest Ami Bios, 440 BX Chipset.
Twin PIII @ 800MHz each.
1 Gig RAM.
IDE1: 0: HDD: IBM 60GB (Master)(ultra-DMA)(OS + software listed below).
IDE1: 1: LiteOn 16X DVD ROM (Slave)(ultra-DMA).
IDE2: 0: Pioneer A05 (-R) Writer (Master)(ultra-DMA).
IDE2: 1: HDD: IBM 60GB (Slave)(ultra-DMA)(Pagefile only).
[i'll be swapping out the A05 for the new A09 soon]
-----
DXC v1.5.2 (No friggin' Express or Platinum).
CloneDVD2 (latest).
AnyDVD (latest).
Power DVD Player v.4.0.
Dedicated backup box: ie no other software loaded.
Other variables might be:
1. Is your version of Nero compatible with 64 bit?
2. And as kivory666 said, have you got enough PSU power for that King-Kong box of yours.
3. Software, utility, "processes-running" or driver conflicts(?)
-------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------
Thanks kivory666.
No, it's not Intervideo dvdcopy3 that I use but I don't want to say because many posters don't think well of the program and they will tell me to go post in a ghost-town-forum where nobody will answer my questions! :-)
Thank you for your interest. I wish Pioneer, or any drive maker or software vendor, would think of making such a 4X utility for purchase or bundle. But engineers are all Lab and no real-world. All they can think of is speed, spEED, SPEEED! And the marketing suits think speed is their only competitive sales weapon. They only think of how fast data transfers, not how player-compatible a movie DVD backup is or how effective slower speeds affecting the dyes during during burning can reduce pixellation problems. Engineers never get out enough & suits are just ... well ... suits!
Anyway, I'll keep looking for a solution.

hehehe @ whisperer
well, i have been ridiculed for a point i made in a post before too~ it's not a good feeling, so, if you choose to refrain from stating what you use, it's all good in my book~ :) next time i should think about that too before i reply to someone to help w/ a problem they are having only to have newbies flame me to death because they happen to be in a different "tax bracket" than me...but, before i get off topic...
to discmania...i hope you get things sorted out with your new "monster system"...i would make sure that you have sufficient power to your new rig 1st and foremost...that is THE most important factor to a STABLE setup..i have been building my own computers for the last 10 years or so and without a steady, good power supply, i have fried quite a few motherboards when i first started out...just a word of caution to you, i don't want your newly built/purchased pc to go thru what my 1st one did... :)
let us know how things work out...any new developments and/or errors and then i can be of further assistance to you~ :) im always willing to help IF i can~ :)

I took out the Pioneer drive and replaced it with a TDK 4x Burner. This works perfectly so it leads me to believe the Pioneer is faulty. In my old unit after I had just bought it it was making a-lot of noise also. Yes both optical drives are on the same IDE cable - I know this is not ideal but don't think this is the cause of the problem. My current power supply is 300watts and will be upgrading to 400watts soon. Again I don't think that's the problem so will be sending back the Pioneer as a faulty machine.

good to hear you figured it out~ yeah, the 400pSu will be better for your setup~ guess a RMA is in order for your pioneer...faulty drives..it happens sometimes~ had that with my optorite 12x dd1205 a few years ago...those drives SUCK~ :)

@kivory666
I do all my burns at 8X as well. I don't scan much, but, I did do comparison scans at 8X and 4X to see how much more beneficial 4X burning actually was. I only use TY and Verb as well, and my 8X scans were better than the 4X... Both my 8X TY's (+ & -) and my 8X+R Verbs (-R don't overburn) will "overburn," so, I always rip to HD then transcode with Recode2 and set the speed at 8X vs. maximum. Works like a charm. Even though my Pioneer is a "crappy" scanner, I am convinced that it is truly arguably THE BEST writer when you use quality media!

I agree - except when you have the mispleasure of buying a deffective one! I used to have a 105 and it never failed once - superb burner. The reason 8x gives good results is mainly because all the components of the latest burners have been upgraded and optimised at the same time as Nero and other software has also been improved.

:) creaky took the words out of my mouth again~ :)
well, once you get a WORKING pioneer, you will see that it is a GREAT burner that both teflonmyk and i use regularly...as long as you use quality media, it IS argueably one of the very best~ :)
TY and Verbs would be MY personal recommendation~
good luck when your new one comes in...assuming the RMA went through...

I may have put in a TUFF disc just to make sure it was not the Ritek discs that were the problem so I presume they were CMC, unless Ritek are now CMC?

The disc is definitely a Ridisk because it is a DVD-R, not +R. I have checked this out and CMC MAG - G.AEI. is just the code name for Ridisk. The code name for CMC discs is TTH02.

Actually I think there's a mix up between Ridisc and Ritek. Clearly they are not the same, though since the Ridisc have always performed well for me I just assumed they were Ritek. Yes they are probably manufactured by CMC. However the CMC branded discs sold on the same website have a different code altogether - all very confusing. Have a look for yourself:-

@Discmania - there are many codes for many types of discs. Unfortunately far too many companies use manufacturer's such as CMC for their discs, for instance
ps just checked your original logfile and the ASPI layer looks to be stuffed, you could do with fixing it..
