New Compac with AMD Athlon 64 3200+ chip, 160 Gig HD and 512megs of RAM. running XP Home. Drive is HP DVD writer 400c with latest firmware (KH27)installed.

I use DVD Decrypter for ripping and Nero 6 for burning, DVD Shrink when needed. In the past month or so, I've been having problems with the 400i taking inordinate amounts of time to both read discs and then burn them with Nero. Nero shows a message "burning at 8x" or something like that, but it's actually only reading and writing at 2.5x.
I'm not sure if this is hadware or software related. I HAVE tried to uninstall the DVD burner and re-install it through plug and play. Have contacted HP but wasn't given much help. The HP is on my new Compac computer with an AMD Athalon 64 processor, which really ripped though DVD's when I first got it. I'm still in the process of moving stuff to the new computer, so occasionally I use both computers and that's how I realized the HP was taking so much time. I have had some burn failures, which i've put down to the media I got, but it usually works just fine, and the discs play on my system.
A few things I should mention that COULD have caused or help cause:
1. about the time I think the problem started, I used Partion Magic to split up the 160 Gig HD. This renamed drives.
2. I had problems with Nero Cover Designer and Ahead didn't fix it, so I went back and reinstalled my OEM version, just recently downloaded the 32 Meg file again. I'm now running 6.6.0.14.
3. I purchased an external MadDog 16x drive (which seems a piece of shit)and installed it, but keep it turned off 99% of the time. So, unless I've confused the Registry I don't THINK that's the problem.

When I went into the Device Manager to check on DMA, the secondary IDE Chaannel says DMA is available on the Device 1 (2nd drive), but not Device 0 (the first) "Current Transfer Mode is "PIO Mode". I suspect that may be part of the problem, but can't figure out how to change it.

Also, I've defraged the HD, cleaned out all the temp files I could find and I'm currently running Nero's Create a data disc test. The speed has gone from 1.76 at the beginning to 1.29 right now.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Getting your IDE channel set to DMA would be a good start. Here is a guide:

http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/dvdguide005.html

It would be helpful if you could post a current Nero burn log.

If you didn't save one then you can find them here, at the location where Nero saves them for you:

C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log

Be sure to not post your Nero serial number. It starts with 1a23 or something similar.

I believe you may have found the problem (at least part of it) for me. I followed the guide, deleted Secondary IDE, and rebooted. (System hung up until I turned it completely off and then restarted it). System did NOT find the secondary IDE until I went back into Device Manager and asked it to re-install from Device Manager. Device 0 is still at PIO.

Have not played with Regedit (for obvious reasons) Dumb question: how do I save it? Do I just open it and then save it, or save before I open?

I have the Nero log, would you like me to post it now or try the Regedit first. appreciate the help.

Fastfrank:

I spent most of the day on the problem, and it was indeed the DMA (or at least it is now working just fine. Had HP support on the line for an hour (35 minutes of which was waiting while Nero burned one disc). Eventually solved the problem by, uninstalling Nero, and THEN uninstalling Ide Secondary, and the DVD and CD drives. Rebooted, and reinstalled Nero.
Your pointer to the DVDplus video guide site was very helpful. If that is yours, you may want to add something about checking the burning software when PIO won't go away.

Many, many thanks.

Hi there,

You uninstalled Nero 1st, then fix the DMA, then reinstalled Nero.

Thank you for the idea/update. I will try to keep this in mind next time someone has PIO/DMA issues !

The amazing difference is from 25-35 minutes to read and 35 to write, just ripped a 4.2 gig disc in 6 minutes, and burned it in 8. WOW! I didn't believe DMA could make such a difference. The 64-bit processor obviously has something to do with it, but...

BTW, the reason I uninstalled Nero first, was that I had tried several times to uninstall the drives and the Controller, with no luck in being able to change the PIO. MY fact for the day.

Hi Dick,
Glad it's working for you. I didn't know that Nero would interfere with changing the transfer mode settings. That is good information, Thanks!

That seems to come up quite a bit so I am glad you found that out and let us know. I'm sure it will help someone else. If you see someone with a similar problem here I hope you can help them out!

BTW, I'll make that an addition to the guide as well.

Cheers,
Frank

Just for the record, I don't think Nero was really doing anything bad. I had a really bad disc a few weeks ago, and DVD Decrypter kept getting error messages. I told it to skip the errors, but that was probably when XP decided it had had enough. Since I have Nero activated as my burner on DVD Decrypter, that may have been the connection. Once XP had made the decision that Nero was connected, it didn't want to let go.

Anyway, that was the solution. Glad I can help someone else for a change.
