Hi all, this is to help people using routers.

If Azureus is showing yellow smilies and you have a router, then you need to set up port forwarding. Don't worry about your Norton/Zone alarm firewall, if they are setup to allow Azureus internet access then thats not whats wrong.

To fix the problem, you will need to add Azureus port forwarding to your router. As these settings can be in different sections here is a site that provides details for setting up port forwarding for a number a routers and programs (quite a lot really).

Instructions are found here: http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm

If for some reason you can't find your router, which is highly inprobable below are some brief instructions:

Firstly, take a look at their default guide for a router:

If nothing there heaps you, here are some notes, similar to other posts, but put here as well for convience:

You will need a static IP, e.g if you have a router it will be something like 192.168.1.xxx, to find this out go Start > Run > cmd (this opens up the Dos Prompt) type ipconfig /all (look down to the number across from IP Address, this is your address, different to your external address).

If it is not 192.168 etc, but an "external" address, then go Start > Settings > Network Connections > right click on your internet connection > Properties > scroll down the list to Internet Protocol TCP/IP > Properties > then in "Use the following IP Address" type in 192.168.1.55 (55 is any number you want as long as no one else at home is using it or your router).

IP: 192.168.1.55
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.2 (router IP)
DNS Server: Find yours at http://forum.portforward.com/YaBB.cgi?board=Routers;action=displa... however I just used 192.168.1.2 and it found its way out.

(these are MY routers IP, you will find your's on the manufacturers website if its not on http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm)

To double check your IP, do Start > Run > cmd (this opens up the Dos Prompt) type ipconfig /all again. It should now be 192.168.1.55 (or your number as the last digit).

Once your know your IP address you can map a port range for forwarding purposes. Open up your router by typing in its addressing into a internet browser, for me this was http://192.168.1.2
Login with username and password (username: admin password: password as default for some routers) then setup port forwarding, this was under virtual server for me
e.g. Map a Port Range: Start 6881 - End 6999 - TCP - 192.168.1.55
Save, restart router.

In Azureus > Tools > NAT / Firewall Test > Make sure the listening port is something like 6881. After 5-10 minutes the smilies should change colour from yellow to green.

:)

Note: Some people have said that 6881 is targeted by ISP's to throttle downloads so maybe put it to something within the same range but not 6881, I.e 6882!

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PROTOWALL, PEERGUARDIAN or SAFEPEER PLUGIN installed for backup against anything nasty!!

OK this goes out to everyone, if your router IS NOT at http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm DONT ASK ME what the default http://192.168.xxx.xxx address is to access its settings, YOU CAN FIND THAT OUT!

All you have to do is know the manufacturers name, and usually the model number, found on the installation disk or something.

Go to google or yahoo, type: "Model Name" http admin
Or something similar to bring up results for your router and how to access it through the browser. These sites should also have the default username and password which wouldn't have been changed since your've proberly never accessed it before.

P.S strum try http://192.168.100.1 (found at http://linuxweblog.com/node/154)

Next time, search for it, its not hard!!!! Then while your there see if it has details on Port Forwarding. Its easy to do, the hardest place is knowing where to do it.

But i can't put enought emphasis on http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm It tells you how to port forward and everything :)

Well if youve changed your router and nothings changed, then it may not be your router.

Helps to post productive comments, i.e whether you have a firewall etc, instead of one line saying something doesn't work :)

ok i've got forwarding setup to my static IP (6881 to 6999) and i've excepted the application "Azureus.exe" AND opened ports (TCP and UDP) in my windows sp2 FW from 6881 to 6889, rebooted my router (linksys) and computer but still get the NAT error.

my static IP is 192.168.1.104 (not that that will help clue you in but i'm giving you all the info i have).

ps as a test i've shut down my windows FW and that doesn't seem to make any difference so i'm not sure it's a FW issue really.

pps i even tried putting my computer in the DMZ (outside the router's FW) and that didn't seem to change anything either :(

ppps i'd really, really appreciate any help i can get ;)

For SWEEX BROADBAND router users. (Sorry zilla I have no clue what might be going wrong with your settings)

Dont bother going to their website for help, they have no info on the broadband router, only their adsl and isdn routers.

The webbpage you need is 192.168.2.1 to adjust your router settings.
General setup -> NAT -> port forwarding
Private IP :your ip address (ipconfig at dos prompt)
Type :Both UPD and TCP
port range: 6882 - 6890
Set Azureus to list to port 6890

Dont bother with the special application sub menu. It is designed to specify programs that need to bypas the nat firewall because they need multiple connections. However, trying to get the router to make nat exception for azureus didnt work for me. I could only choose from a list of 5 "popular" programs, and I couldnt add any program of my own.
I could add trigger ports and public ports, but... well it just didnt work for me. Maybe I did something, I dunno, but port forwarding did the trick for me.

AND REBOOT. I was cussing and screaming and pulling the hair out of my head... until I rebooted, then I went back to mellow ;D

I am using Norton 2005 Firewall and antivirus btw, so that doesn´t seem to be the problem.

PS About port range: I am not sure about this. Do we need to forward a range of ports or just the one Azureus listens too? I figured forwarding a range of ports would allow for more connections, but I really have no clue on that. I experimented a bit and I did not notice any increase in speed. So maybe it is best to only forward the one port azureus listens too for safety reasons? If anyone has any knowledge of this I would appreciate feedback. Also I tried setting my upload speed to unlimited along with my download speed, because I figured there might be some hidden setting that connect the two to encourage users to upload more and thus keep the network alive. I really need info on this, because setiing upload to unlimited is bad for my bandwidth stats. My ISP will only let me upload 2 gigs a month :(( and if I go over it I get switched back to 56k connection EEEK! :( So please, if anyone knows if setting max upload speed does not boost download speed, let me know.

Many thanks in advance and also many many thanks for the info I found in this thread.

Peace.

edit: Sorry, I behaved a bit like a total noob before ;p So I read the guide on this site and yes, only one port needs to be forwarded and yes, up and down are linked (figures), but I did change my max upload to only 20kb because at unlimited speed I was uploading TWICE !! the amount of what I was downloading.I will probably have to lower that even more :( Stupid upload limit >:(

Hi, I have have the feared-by-all NAT error w/ Azureus (port 35000) and have tried EVERTHING! I have a deticated firewall [IpCop v1.4.6 (newest)] and I forwarded port 35000 TCP and UDP to my router (192.168.1.1). I have a D-Link router (DI-624) and used the guide at www.portforward.com to set up port forwarding for port 35000 TCP and UDP to my computer [192.168.1.100 (static)]. And I used the guides at www.portforward.com to set up my Norton Internet Security 2005 to allow all connections for Azureus. So everything should work, right?! Cuz I have both my hardware and software firewalls AND my router forwarding or allowing port 35000 TCP and UDP. What else can I do?!

All my stuff I know about is listed below:
RCA Cable Modem
IpCop newest version (1.4.6)
D-Link DI-624 router
Norton Internet Security 2005
Azureus 2.3.0.4

THANX!
