no you can alternately use a slide card but i dont like them i prefer the fliprop although the slide card does have its advantages over the fliptop

the main one being you can use swap magic and the slide card without opening the ps2 at all but with the fliptop you have to replace part of the consoles shell.

flip top all the way. A much easier process. If you are affraid to void your warranty then just wait. the warranty is only like 3 months anyway. you need the flip top or slide card with swap magic because if you were to open the drawer to swap discs the normal way, the PS2 would reset so it would not work.
