is there a defect with celeron processing chips?

OK, my friend who used to work with gateway said that a celeron chip was intended to be a pentium 4 chip but it had a major defect and soo intel then called the chip celeron, but i read in consumer reports that the celeron chip is exactly like a pentium 4 just cheaper. soo who is right? if there is a defect what is it? is the defect soo bad i should never buy a celeron?

your friend pulling your leg
a celeron is just a striped down version of the pentium
(a cheaper version)for want of a better phrase
it is i suppose what a sempron is to the athlon processor
if you can afford it go for the p4

the main difference between a true p4 & a p4 celeron besides cost is the amount of ram cache on the cpu. p4 celerons currently have 128 or 256kb of cache whereas the true p4 has 512kb & up of ram cache.

The reason there is less cache is because it is a pentium that has an error on the die cache! They just shut down most of it and hey presto. Get a Sempron.

Pc2004 - always does like an intel. Probably optimised for them and the memory benchmarks are pointless. The FSB is different for both, its bound to be different.

3D2001SE - fair comment although the margins are very narrow, and not convincing enough. The cpu benches are again linked to the highter Mhz clock of the intel and fair enough it wins.

Quake 3! that no longer a suitable benchmark for cpus? I thought people were moving on.. (its probably memory and subsystem that helps intel) to Unreal tournament. AMD is always better here by significant amounts

Aquamark puts the cpus at about neck and neck.

FarCry and DOom3 well semprons do ok. The tests margins are narrow again.

Business WInstone? No idea about that. (business always seems to put intel ahead)

The media encoding apps are designed to use SSE2 so intel has that advantage. Ok fair point on the old socket a semprons not having SSE2.
The decoding and encoding is purely intel loving.

Compiling is Cpu intensive, and the cinebench also show AMD stengths

Data compression as stated is related to the memory and cache, that is clocked higher in the celeron, and so comes out on top.

The virus check is not helpfull, since that is in no way a CPU singular task, there is much of the subsytem to look at.

Overall the bench marks are biased because too much emphasis is put on the problem the sempron for socket A has - no SSE2. For a value processor the semprons are a good choice - unless you spend your time decoding and encoding with DivX! Semprons on socket 754 will continue to kick celerons even more. Since AMD no longer make the socket A processor it is doing a good job at competing against a newer 'enhanced' celeron - with an architecture that was good in its day (k7). Socket 754 is cheap enough, and the new semprons on that are good chips.
