As the subject sugests, i am looking to buy a new computer for school and i am unsure as to which processor to go with. Im buying through dell (even thought i truthfully dispise them) cuz i get a discount through my school.

So my question here is which is better/faster, a 2.8ghz p4 w/ dual processing but no HT , or 3ghz p4 with HT? Ive read and understand how the two work and obviously depends on how much multitasking and wat not. But on just normal use with not much multitasking would they perform the same. Im leaning towards the dual core cuz if i do multitask i dont want lagging.

Thanx for your time.

ok but then again what if u want to play games then the dual core cpu will be outperformed and have you looked at the x2 (amd is currently cheaper, faster, and cooler than p4 cpu,s wish i got one

I cannot believe there is any reason at all to get a 3Ghz Pentium over an AMD. You are strongly advised to get some help builing a PC without your school coupon. (sorry to sound discouraging but you have to go against the grain sometimes)

You would be better off with the Hyper threading cpu in future games - more support will definitely be around. However dual CPU's are what will make software more flexible. Get the dual core because you can play games, and run your own apps or other things separately. That hyperthreading is very good, but not as good as 2 cores.

thank you very much or the advice. Im not much for PC games (except Civilization 3 and soon to be 4) which would run fine on that cuz im gettin a good video card as well with probably a gb ram, sufficient for my needs. So if ht would be better for games then its pointless for me. I do mulitask somewhat just not to the extent that im sure others do. i got myabe 4 or 5 different taskbar windows and only 4 system trays running. So in that aspesct im good.
The reason i choose the pentium was becuz dell is exclusively pentium. Is there anywhere that ships to canada or in canada that sells quality custom pc's. Alienware.ca was decent but shippin was very expensive and they were very high priced compare to dell. but they sell amds.

in hamilton ontario. I thought about building it myself because i have the skill/knowledge too. However i like the warranty factor and not having to go around and find the best prices on individual parts. Although if it comes down to that i must.
