hi, my bittorrent speed is very slow and will take me about 98 hours to download a single film.

I went here > https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

and it says that all my ports are closed..

so i looked for a way to solve this by folling these instructions >
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/73686

i got through the first 3 steps, but when i went to step 4 to type my IP address in the address bar, i got a message saying "refused connection" so now i'm stuck. that was what i got on firefox browser so i tried on IE browser too and i got a "page can not be displayed" message.

i double checked that my ip was right, so thats not it, so why does it not allow me to type in my ip address? anyone know whats wrong?

im on NTL and an XP computer. i looked in my internet connections and it shows this> heres a screencap too just incase it helps any.

http://tinypic.com/9jnic5.jpg

thanks

Do you have a Firewall?

Or can you think of anything else blocking you access to the internet?

Also, try calling up your ISP and ask if they block any ports, and if so, can they unblock them.

Sorry for the long wait for my response, i was in the middle of moving house and lost my internet connection.

I'm still having the same problem, my downloads speed is always between 0-7 kbs at the most, it doesnt seem to go any further and if it does then it lasts for a few seconds then goes back down to 1 or 2kbps.

I tried this >

1. Open the 'Network Connections' folder (click Start, then Control Panel, then Network and Internet Connections, then Network Connections.)
2. Click the shared connection or the Internet connection that is protected by Internet Connection Firewall, and then, under Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
3. On the Advanced tab, click Settings.
4. For each port you wish to forward, (i.e. 6881, 6882, ... 6889) do the following:

1. On the Services tab, click Add and enter all of the following information:
2. In Description of service, type an easily recognized name for the service, such as "BitTorrent".
3. In Name or IP address of the computer hosting this service on your network, enter 127.0.0.1 (this means "the local machine.")
4. In both External and Internal port number for this service, enter the port number, e.g. 6881.
5. Select TCP, then OK.

that was to disable any firewall i have for XP. I did as said above and when I tried my downloads again, it said that it couldn't connect to tracker. I tried downloads from all different places and got the same problem so it was obviously caused by what i did above so i had to change everything back tot he way it was. When I changed it back to the way it was before the tutorial, it worked again but still at a very slow speed, same as before.

The torrents i download have lots of seeders so its not that either.

I'd like to try this tutorial >
(as i mentioned when i made this thread)

but i'm still getting stuck on step 4, when i type in my Routers IP address, i get "page can't be displayed"

Other tutorials dont work either, is there anything else i can try?

Also I forgot to mention, when I get to step 3 on this tutorial>
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/73686

in the black information box, it says "IP routing enabled: NO"

Think that might be the problem? or have anything to do with it?

to get to your router, type in routerlogin.net into your browser.

Also DO NOT forward to 6881,2,3etc, no trackers will connect as it is banned by most isps and trackers.

ok... I've been working on this all day with no luck. I am running windows XP with a broadband Speedstream 5360 modem, no router, ABC is excluded on my firewall list. I've tried reseting my ip address, no help. I've looked at everything I could find online, nothing. If I download from Yahoo, I get 180 kb/s. ABC is giving me 0-5 kb/s. please help.

jsh99,

how many seeds and peers are on the torrent you are using?

How much are you uploading?

Please visit dslreports.com and report back your max download and upload speeds.

Redkelly,

Do you really have a router? Because in your screenshot, it says 10.0mbps which is really slow, most broadband with a router have 100.0 mbps.

Please visit dslreports.com and tell me your max upload and download speeds and which router you have.

Max U/L is 304
Max D/L is 982
even with a few peers and seeds, I can get up to 20 kb/s but that is from 6 people at 2,2,3,3,5&5 kb/s. One time when I started up I was getting 25 kb/s from 1 guy, that lasted a few minutes and then back down to 2-5 each.
my upload speeds are similar with 4's and 5's. I am usually uploading faster then the downloading.

jsh99,

Your d/l is 982 KB or kb? There is a hige difference there...

As for seeds and peers, the files you are downlaoding have a very low amount therefore the slower downloads.

A seed is someone who has 100% of the file and is uploading it completely.

A peer is someone like you, who is downloading it and uploading as well.

Your download speed : 1007460 bps, or 983 kbps.
A 122.9 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 318290 bps, or 310 kbps.

I tried an experiment, I am d/ling a file with 37 seed and 5 peers at a total speed of 22KB/s from 10 different people, highest speed is 6 KB/s from any one of them.
Do you only get the higher speeds when you have many seeds, and all only 5-6 KB/s from any one at a time? I was under the impression that the files could come through at 100+ KB/s from any 1 guy at a time. I am incorrect?
Thank you again.

Well, you do have a decent connection but not very fast so you probably wont hit higher than 70 Kbps download ever. As for your experiment, you can see that the more connected seeds and peers, the better chance you have for higher speeds, as lets say you are connected to 30 people (fat chance :) ) and they are all giving you 2 Kb then you will have 60 Kb download. Not bad rite?

As for getting 100+ from one guy, it cant work like that UNLESS you are the only peer and the ONLY seed is uploading 100+. Otherwise, all the seeds have to split their upload speed between all the possible peers.

jsh99,
read this for ABC settingshttp://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/guide_to_abc_page_3.cfm#2

I myself, use Bit Comet. Remember to upload at least 65% of your maximum to get the most out of downloads.

Jkwon,

6881, etc are usually blocked by trackers and isps therefore it is better to open a random port, or if you are using bit comet, then open port 12242.

Good, glad i could help.

Remember for Bit COmet, either open up a random part OR port 12242, and in your case, upload 18 Kb/s.
