Found out some new info...My optical drives are on the primary IDE Controller...The Sony install manual had me thinking har drives are on primary and optical drives on secondary... well my opticals are both on primary and the hard drive isnt even on a IDE controller.
but the problem stil lies in that i cannot enable dma on the slave drive on the IDE it is runnig in PIO..i download a proggy from dell called pio2dma and it doesnt work....i dont know how to enable it.i wonder if i unistall the primary ide controller and reboot if that will do it?by the way my pc is a dimension 8400

Your hard drive is probably SATA. That's why your optical drives are on primary IDE channel and no secondary channel is listed.
For both the optical drives: under device manager, make sure "DMA if available" is chosen for each. Leave the drives themselves enabled. However, uninstall/disable the primary IDE channel in Device Manager. Then reboot. Windows will find everything as "new hardware" and DMA should be present on both drives.

Also, check the jumpers on the drives.

i guess i figured it out guys...it is a SATA hard drive and only have a primary IDE. i reset the cmos on the mobo. when i rebooted the pc recognized both with dma..however when i rebooted(4 times) the pc beeped and said floppy diskette failure. i assume it was trying to boot the pc from a floppy drive. i cant remember what i did now but it is ok now. no beeping and trying to boot from a floppy.

Do you eve have a floppy on that computer? If not go back to the Bios setup and find the "boot sequence". This is the order in which the computer will look for a bootable drive. If no floppy, remove it from the boot sequence list or at least move it to last choice.
