Toshiba SD-R5372 burning DVD only at 2X plus

Hi,

I have just replaced my HP 4X burner with a 16X DL Toshiba SD-R5372 on my PC. Now, I can only burn at between 2.4 and 4.0X speed with 8X DVD+R media. I have tried with 2 different 8X media (Verbatim and Velocity) without any luck. I have also flashed the latest firmware TU53. Checked the IDE setting, it is running at Ultra DMA mode 5 and installed the latest Nero (6.6.014).

Has anyone run into this type of problem before ??

I have the Same Burner But I don"t have the Same Problem....

You should Burn Disks at Half the Disks Rated Speed anyways because this Lowers the Chance of Burn errors especially if you are useing Cheapo Media...I burn all 8x disks at 4x speed and 4x disks at 2.4x speed because if I don"t I end up with a DVD that Stops and Starts and Pauses all the Time when Viewed on my DVD Player.....

Well, just upgraded to XP with SP2, and firmware to TU55 and tried with a third brand (HP) of 8X +R DVDs, it is still burning only at 2.4X with Nero speed test. I don't mind if it even burn at 4X like my old HP burner, but 2.4X is not the reason that I swap out the 4X burner.

Any hints anyone. I have looked at the Toshiba site, they also recommended to use Nero as the burning software. May be I should try a different burning software to see if it makes any differences. Also, is there other speed testing software out there.

I have the same problem only worse.. mine only writes at 1X not matter what I use!!!

let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

IS THIS WHAT YOU MEAN? I've now tried every brand of media I have and no difference. Reads and writes at about 1.3X

It looks like your Toshiba took 28 minutes to burn roughly <2/3rds of the DVD, all the while telling Nero that it's burning at 8X.

Did you get the Master/Slave/Cable Select jumper in the right location for your configuration? If it was installed in the same location as the HP then it should have the same jumper setting as the HP did.
While you are at it. make sure your IDE connectors are securely plugged in to the drive and the board. Same for the power connector.

If all that is correct then you may want to send the Toshiba back.

Hi there,

When you say you can't write at 8x, do you mean 8x is NOT an option in the burn speed, or it lets you select 8x, just never burns that fast ?

I suggest you try to burn with nothing running in the background.
Turn off Antivirus, Firewalls, all those small programs that runs, then try again.

I have lots of stuff running on my PC, and I never select 4x because I know it will never burn at 4x (Because the PC is too busy).
I always average around 3.1x - 3.5x but this is by choice !

I keep everthing running and burn at 2.0x and I get 100% results.

So maybe your PC is just too busy, it can't feed the the burner so it can't reach high speed burning !
