Quote: My only other thought is to pick up a DVD writer from somebody or buy one and see if that does anything. The ability to write to a DVD+R and not to a DVD-R just seems peculiar.
yeah??? as you me and whompus think very confusing? it almost pionts to a defective drive on -R discs? but i would try a new brand type media in -R before i bought anew drive...
Nothing here to see, move along folks.

I happened to find a DVD-R disc which came with the drive and it failed. So I might just try to get a test drive. I'll let you know the results.
Thanks for your help and input!

Quote: Recorder: <_NEC DVD+RW ND-3100AD> Version: 107E
- 107E was last version, dated Oct 2004!! so the firmware is way out of date to cope with newer media..see here -

Quote: Recorder: _NEC DVD+RW ND-3100AD, Media type: DVD+R
- your blanks discs aren't being recognised, due to the firmware being so old. this is similar to what you should see - Quote: Recorder: HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: TYG02 -
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193
- ie a 3line paragraph when the firmware's up to date. Your new discs are newer than the burner's firmware knows what to do with as it's out of date and neglected by the manufacturer. it happens sometimes when newer burners are manufactured, they let some drives' firmware slip by the wayside.

I used the modified firmware based off a Mad Dog 2.f9 which seems to be same one as Liggy's 3100@3500 conversion and everything seems to be working fine now.
so thanks again for the help.

A follow up to the problem I was experiencing of being able to write to DVD +R and not to DVD-R's. It turns out that it was in fact the DVD burner that was bad. I bought a newer Lite-on and installed it last night. I was able to burn the image to the same DVD-R media as befoer and it burned just fine.
Thanks to whompus and rotary for your help.
I'm assuming it is probably not worth sending the drive back to Lite-on to see if they can repair it. It is about 14 months old now.

Hi there,
Here's a few things I can see:
Quote: Finalize CD : FALSE
Always finalize your DVD if you want it to play on a DVD Player.
Quote: Physical memory : 511MB (523628kB)
Free physical memory: 10MB (10960kB)
Memory in use : 97 %
97% used, holly molly you have WAY too much stuff running in the background.
You needs a little bit more free ram !
Stop some of your background tasks (Antivirus Software, Anti Spyware, all those little software in the system tray)
Quote: 3:00:17 PM #15 Phase 36 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1832
Burn process started at 4x (5,540 KB/s)
When having burning issues, I always suggest you burn at the lowest speed.
Burn at x2.0 (x2.4 for +Media)
Your burner seems to have the latest firmware:
Ricoh DVD+RW RW8165 v1.03
http://forum.rpc-1.com/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1815
Try a different brand of media, the logs says your using a DVD+RW but doesn't seem to identify the MEDIA ID !
My 2 cents...

@ambaytek -
Quote: Recorder: DVD+RW RW8165, Media type: DVD+R
- your blanks discs aren't being recognised, due to the firmware being so old. this is similar to what you should see -
Quote: Recorder: HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: TYG02 -
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193
- ie a 3line paragraph when the firmware's up to date. Your discs are newer than the burner's firmware knows what to do with as it's out of date.
As per cougar_ii you need to try 1.03, but 1.03 was dated April 2004!!, so even the latest version of firmware is way out of date to cope with newer media..
