I have a friend whos two sons are leaving for college in New Mexico pretty soon.He has alot of DVDs that his sons want to take with them.He asked me to make copies for him so they could take the backups and he can keep the originals.I told him yeah if he bought the blank DVDs.I told him to buy Verbatim DVD+Rs because I have always had good luck with them. His wife went to Best Buy and came back with Verbatim DVD-Rs.Will these be ok to use?

You should be alright, as long as your burner supports the format. Just follow the generic rules - burn at 4X, booktype DVD-ROM, and you should be alright. Make a test copy for them and see if it plays alright in the players they'll be using.

Later!

DVD-R cannot be booktyped, that's only for +R.

You should also do a trial with one -R and have them try it out on the player(s) that he will use to make sure that they will be compatible with the media.

You should be fine with -R format it is more compatible with most players, especially the older ones.
