Ok. I bought +R's and they work perfectly. Why can't I burn -R's? Also, how do I burn the 8x Verbatims at 12X?

ohhhhh I forgot..... DVD+R 8x Verbatims can be burned at 12x.... it's compatible with 12x hardward.... and DVD+R 8x Taiyo Yudens can be burned at 16x ....... it's the software that allows it to be burned at that speed if you have the hardware that will allow it! Programs like CopyToDVD and DVDFab Express will allow you to pick your speed of burning!Other programs like DVDXCopy or DVDCopy3 will burn at the highest allowable speeds. Sooooooo if you have good media and up to date hardware and running the right programs that allow you to pick your speed, that's how to burn your 8x DVD+Rs at higher speeds.

I have always been a stickler on burning all video reproduction at 4x but just for $hits and giggles I burned a TY (YUDEN000 T02)8x DVD+R at 16x and although there wasn't any freezing or pixelation on playback there were some walking verticle bars throughout the playback. They might not be seen on smaller tvs but quite noticeable on my 52" HDTV. To make a long story short, it's going to be 4x for me. The 6 minutes I saved on burning time is not worth it especially since it took almost 2 hrs to encode with DVD-RB/CCE. I'll reburn the folder at 4x and all will be good. Quality and speed don't mix. You can have one or the other but not both. I prefer quality.

But, because EVERYONE has been telling me to do sooooooooo I burn now at 4X......the question that Vin wanted to know is how to burn a DVD+R 8x Verbatim at higher speeds. I answered the question. You elaborated that higher speeds are not recommended! Thanks for reminding me!

IHoe,
You're right. The point I was trying to make is don't worry about trying to overspeed your burns. You're looking for trouble. Stick to the golden rule and keep your burn speeds to 4x or 8x max.

These are some good golden rules, if you follow them you can't go wrong
Quote: 1. Buy good media that is suited to your burner AND players.
2. Make sure your burner's firmware is up to date.
3. Make sure DMA is on for all devices on all IDE channels.
4. Do not try to set the booktype (bitsetting) on -R disks.
5. Don't try to burn -R disks in a burner that will only take +R (and vice-versa).
6. If you burn with Nero, make sure it is up to date (see here) and because InCD has been known to conflict, remove it. Use the Nero Clean tool.
7. Burn at 4x max. It only takes an extra few minutes.
8. Don't put adhesive labels on your burned disks

vin_llo, it can be a bunch of things, but I see you have very little RAM. You may have had less memory on your older PC, but I bet you weren't burning them at 8X either. First thing you should do is get some rewritables!!! Test on them until you've fixed the problem. Also, burn at a slower speed - maybe 4X, and shut down any programs running in the background including anti-virus, Win Media Player, etc. Running at 58% of your physical RAM before burning is high. You can increase your virtual memory size setting too.
Update: "10:13:56 PM #27 CDR -1046 File Writer.cpp, Line 311
Illegal disc"
I don't know about the illegal disc because your burner should be able to handle +/-Rs. Switch media brand. Try Verbatims or Ridata.
BTW, Ridata is excellent media. Just because you get PIF errors does not mean READING errors. Ridatas are well under the limit. And I'll use Ridatas before buying bargain UNBRANDED Taiyo Yudens anyday. Buying fake TYs is equivalent to buying Princo or Kypermedia, so unless you are 100% sure they are genuine TYs (i.e., Fuji Japan from Best Buy), you may be worse off than you think.

See this is the thing. Prior to switching computers, which now I have a gig of ram, I could burn -R's. Now I can't burn anything except for +R's. Before I could do both of them. I still doesn't make sense to me.

Ok. I spoke to the IT people at work today and they suggested that there might be something wrong with the motherboard. They said an I/O error or something. Does anyone know about this??

Firmware works great. I can burn all formats and it does play on both standalone players. I have no idea why it does now but I'm happy it does.
