Well it came apon me, There are new more graphically demanding games (REALLY!? :O)

So I decided to upgrade my video card, I went from 64mb Geforce 4 to a 256mb Radeon 9600Pro.

Now im moving on to the ram, I have 256mb RDRAM. I went looking for it and was appauled at how much rdram costs. My plans were to get a Gig of ram, but that would cost $600(can). So I looked on sites and found out it would only cost $350(Can) to change my motherboard to one that supports Dual channel DDR ram (A gig of it), the mobo also supports 8x agp (compatible with my card).

The only thing left that I need to know is how to find the socket type of my cpu. Where is it located?

Please help me guys.

I got....a moto

Yea Asus is a nice mobo, Abit's are good also. As far as ram is concerned you should look up tigerdirect they have a nice rebate on memory right now (Name Brand "Ultra")I think you can buy a gig for under 200 bucks, and if quality of the memory is concerned i bought a 512mb chunk of ultra ram, and have never had one problem out of it, it even holds up while overclocking.

if you get the 3ghz cpu & board than you have to get a pci/e videocard which means you might have to get a bigger psu. how deep is your wallet!!

ddp, why would he need a pci video card? The reason I ask is (as you know from our discussion last night...LOL)I just purchased the following:
Abit VT7 mobo: $69.00
P4 3.0 Ghz HT (socket 478): $199.00
Corsair Twinx Dual Channel DDR 1Gb (2x 512): $109.00

The board came with AGP video slot.

the site i get my stuff from has the socket 478 cpu 3 & 3.2ghz which cost more than the 775 3ghz. if want to go that high than go with the 775 cpu. also he has a good cpu unless he sells it but maybe get half the price for a newer cpu. also he is looking at asus board

when you get the new drive, don't use memorex dvds. check the Nero forum above for the right disks. can ask creaky, squizzle or kivory666(aka Dr Ty) about what disks to use.

hey this is fascinating, i was just thinking of upgrading my comp. when i saw this thread, i have a p4 2.4 with 512 rd ram and was wondering about a few things
1) would 1gig of ddr be much faster than 512 of RD. ( i am suspending disbelief of basic maths for this question :) ) I ask because Mr. Dell told me long ago that RD was very very fast but he neglected to say that it would be very expensive to upgrade in the future and only 2 people in the world would still be using it in '05
2) i'm a bit confussed when it comes to.. socket this and socket that..(architecture something or other) but what do they really mean??? I was wondering could anyone shine a bit of light on that one.
3) I have a geforce (4) 4600ti with 128mb i was wondering is this card limping behind others like a one armed chimp? Is the common statement that bigger number=better when it comes to graphics card? With normal followed by SE and then finally by Pro in the hierarchy of cards?
4) How big a deal is cache on the processor? Would the amd venice core pale in comparison to a similar San Diego?
And finally what exactly is a chipset on a mobo? à la nforce 4 ultra Vs. Sli and how important is Max bus speed on the mobo?
If someone could answer me those few :) things or point me in the direction of understandable answers i would be extremely grateful.

depends on what windows you are using as win98 is somewhat limited to 512meg of ram wereas the others can go higher tho not certain about win me. socket # refers to the # of pins on the cpu which also means the higher the # the newer that version socket is. the more cache on the cpu is usually the better as it helps the cpu run faster. the higher the # is for the series(ex.4600ti) means faster & newer but also more expensive.
